Hunting alone again
Well gang,I head up north to my happy hunting ground, but I'm not as happy about it as I usually am.This will be the second season of being in camp by myself.Normally I would be hunting with my dad and my father in law,but since my dad is out west for the season(visiting family)and my father in law has grown older and less active,I will be going it alone again.Though I did very well last year(scored my biggest and best tasting deer)and have great expectations for this season,I miss being in "camp" with the guys.I really shouldnt call this place a "camp" as its more of the family fortress,22 rooms and 12 bedrooms.Somehow I dont think I'll need all the space. The one buddy that had planned to come up,blew out his knee a few months ago and deffinately cant handle the terrain,so I'm on my own.So if any of you NH hunters come accross a slightly depressed hunter, pulling a monster, could you please give me a hand,Id be glad to meet you and buy you a cup of coffee.

RE: Hunting alone again
I realize this is much easier said than done but maybe it is time for you to become a mentor and instructor of new hunters? Maybe there is a boy scout troop, church group, youth group or some such alternative to these main stream groups that you would be comfortable dealing with to recruit new hunters from. Also, in states like mine (NJ) they are looking for instructor volunteers for teaching the NJ hunter safety courses.
Of course this is not the hunting companionship going up to the family lodge that you are missing right now, but, maybe someone who is a student this year can become a trusted friend in future years. I do apologize for my obvious idealisim, It's proven to be a liability from time to time. Hope you get your monster buck! -BB- |
RE: Hunting alone again
There are also always guys looking for other places to hunt and would gladly help you hunt those big NH deer.

RE: Hunting alone again
Well as for being a mentor,I think I have that title already,I enjoy taking my son and nephews out every chance "they" get.My son is only 3 but my nephews are old enough to go on those cold NH mornings.School on the other hand keeps them from going as often as they and I would like.My seasons usually end fairly quickly,as we have alot of deer on the land I hunt,so they dont get to go if I tag 1 early.
As for guys lookin for a new hunting spot,I've made plenty of offers to guys I trust around me with a gun.The yahoos that want to hunt after drinking all night,I dont need, and believe me,there are plenty of those guys out there. Im still keeping my fingers crossed that I'll find a partner that I enjoy hunting, fishing and shooting with,(my son will be that guy pretty soon),but till then,I'll keep doin what I'm doin. hanks for the replies and good luck this season.Be safe. |

RE: Hunting alone again
I have hunted the Pittsburg area for several years. Nice country. Many hunters on the muzzleloader opener, but it seems to clear out after the first couple of days.
Good luck . . . Rob |
RE: Hunting alone again
Thanks nhhunter,I've been on the boards for almost a year, but they keep loosing my posts,so it sure doesnt look like it.I hunt in Hill NH,I have 1850 acres of private land to myself and 1 other hunter, its a logging opperation,so there are some great logged out areas.I head up there this am,and should be back home sat night or sooner if I tag out early.I'll keep you NH hunters posted. Thanks again, good luck

RE: Hunting alone again
Good Luck NHTEN. I see you are in Dedham, I am in Quincy. I have many friends in Dedham. Maybe some day we can hook up and go shooting at my club, Braintree Rifle and Pistol.

RE: Hunting alone again
Sounds good specialist.Im sittin up in the "camp"trying to stay dry, rainin cats and dogs here right now,but it will make the hunting nice and quiet tomorrow morning.Just finished shooting the rifles, checking their "zero",so its time to sit and wait for morning. As for the rut,I really couldnt tell you.I talked to the guy whos land I lease, and hes been seeing a few deer on the edges of the fields in the middle of the day,so I think its under way if not peaking.Too bad we didnt talk earlier, theres lots of room for another hunter here, maybe next year.Good luck up in Conway,be safe.

RE: Hunting alone again
Well I got back yesterday. I hunted hard saw no deer, and little sign. We saw a bull, and cow moose together. My friends had hunted since wednesday, and also had seen nothing. There were few deer weighed in at the Saco ranger station while we were there. I may try and get back up later, if I have time. It just did'nt seemlike they are rutting yet.

RE: Hunting alone again
Hey specialist,Im sure the rut hasnt startes in my area yet,so Im going back up Thursday and give it another shot.Probably just a day trip, but its worth the effort.Keep us posted if you get back up there.I dint see any sign of the rut starting where I hunt, but it should be soon.

RE: Hunting alone again
Good luck nhten. I used to hunt the Plymouth, NH area (around Loon Lake) years ago before the farm we used to stay at and hunt was sold. Some of my best hunting memories were from that area. I live in NY state now (Rochester) and hate it here. Always wanted to go back to NH and live there but with the job I have now, even though I work from home, I have to have high speed internet access and not too many towns in NH have that yet. When I find one, you can bet I'll be moving. If you're still interested in hunting partners, I'd be glad to talk to you about it if you'd care to.
Thanks, Vinny |
RE: Hunting alone again
Hi Crow, thanks for the post,I would very much like to have a partner to hunt with and if you ever decide to come back and hunt your old stomping ground, shoot me an email.I just got up to what I call the "hunting taj mahal" about 5:00 tonight to find it snowing to beat the band, cant wait for morning. If I do anything worth bragging about,I'll be sure to post it.Stay in touch and we'll see if we can do some hunting some time.NY isnt too far for me to go to hunt either,I hear there are some big deer in those parts.Good luck this season,be safe.

RE: Hunting alone again
Hey all,my season is over but it ended with a bang(or 2).I hunted Dec 3 up in Nh and tagged a nice 7 pt,182#s.Then I was invited to hunt in Maine(m/l),so I went over there,to Ellsworth, and hunted Dec 4 and 5 and shot a huge 8 pt,240#s,so the meat freezer will be full when the butcher is finished.Hope everyones season was sucessful and safe, lets hear about it.

RE: Hunting alone again

RE: Hunting alone again
Hi guys...another NH hunter here. My season wasn't nearly as good as you fellas...I got skunked! It wasn't for lack of trying...I "had" to take two weeks off from work (or I would lose the vacation time)...so I went hunting. I think I went too early though...Nov 2 to Nov 17. I SAW NOTHING!! I did see plenty of sign. I was hunting big woods, alone, with few other hunters in the area. I did plenty of sitting in tree stands and on the ground...some still hunting/scouting...and around Thanksgiving...I did some tracking...but only saw one doe. I figured that I hunted about a total of 150 hours. I guess that's the way it goes when deer hunting in NH. It was, as always, still a good time. Perhaps next year.
