RE: Any bucks in WV
Welcome to the forum.
I have never hunted WV, but remember driving through there and seeing tons of deer. You should do well. Good luck. |
RE: Any bucks in WV
Nice to hear! Get those pictures loaded on here when you get a chance. How are the numbers in Grafton? We are just now recovering from low deer numbers in the eastern panhandle.

RE: Any bucks in WV

RE: Any bucks in WV
If you drove down I-79 then you passed me....Exit 40, Big Otter. I live five miles from the exit ramp....and there is a lot of deer around here.....but not as many as there has been a few years ago before the extended doe seasons...this year the number of tags are down so the deer numbers should be up in the next couple years.

I live in Putnam Co. and deer numbers are up in my neck of the woods. Looks like it's gonna be another good season.

I live in Martinsburg and hunt in Jefferson County and can tell you that both deer numbers and quality are strong. Really nice deer.
I am originally from hardy co. --Moorefield and have land and hunt there as well and think that the deer there suffer somewhat from coyotes, imo. A major problem with the quality of bucks historically in some areas throughout WVcomes with poor management (both by the state and the local hunters). Many hunters I know (most of which are great ol' country boys) still have the attitude that they'd shoot that little 4-point standing right beside a big ol' fat doe--just so "they got their buck". Antler restrictions by the state and some reduced limits on bucks would help. Local hunters/landowners practicing QDM really improves the local herd in places throughout the state, imo. |

RE: Any bucks in WV
Hey guys, I'm down in Boone County and so far this summer I've seen 3 bucks on the farm I hunt. I haven't gotten to do a lot of scouting, but just being down there doing other things I've seen 3. A spike, a 4 pt, and a real nice 6 that might end up an 8. Plenty of really healthy does and a few fawns as well.
So my Boone Co. herd is lookin pretty good so far! |
RE: Any bucks in WV
I've seen a few bucks while driving the central part of the state and I saw one really nice buck on rt. 35 just outside on Winfield.

RE: Any bucks in WV
I live in Kanawha County but mostly hunt in Putnam. I have also seen several nice bucks this year even though I didn't expect to. i don't know about the rest of you but I am sick of the DNR letting everyone kill as many deer as they want as long as they are willing to buy a tag. Everything is about money here and that is why i have bought an Ohio liscence for the last 8 years. I hunt over there 2 to 3 days a week since they can hunt Sundays. The hunting is immenently better and the chances of seeing big deer well outnumber those in WVA.

RE: Any bucks in WV
I live near Marion / Mon county line and have seen a few bucks in my yard. I also hunt and recently returned from Pocahontas co. there were a few more and better bucks down there. I also hunt in Preston co. I have not ventured that way to do any scouting.

RE: Any bucks in WV
I can't wait till the end of october when everybody says where did all of thos ebucks go that I was seeing before the season started.
It seems to be that way every year. They are there all year but then they disappear. I don't know about you guys but I am sick of being able to kill as many bucks as you want as long as you are willing to pay 9 dollars for a tag. This state will pimp out anything for money and that is why I am keeping my Ohio License for another year. At least you can only kill 1 buck per year and they have time to grow a bit. GO EERS! |

RE: Any bucks in WV
Hello WV guy's! I'm from DE but have been coming to your great state for the gun opener every year for the past 8 years. My Uncle owns a house in Harrison county. He was born and raised in Lost Creek but is 83 and is now a Fla snow bird. We meet at the house with cousins and friends every year for a leave the wives at home guy's only trip.
I've taken several bucks over the years but most have been basket size racks. In all the years I've seen only two giants. One from the truck and the other was a miss. The fever got me on that one. I'll be in town (God willing) in Nov.! |
RE: Any bucks in WV
I have seen some posts on my forum of some nice bucks and have also heard others talking about seeing some nice bucks.
I have yet to get my camera in the woods since I have been in a remodeling project of my hunting camper. But I hope to set the camera up this weekend. I sure hope to see more deer this year than last...I HOPE! |
RE: Any bucks in WV
Ive been seeing lots of deer, but have only seen one buck, a small 4 point. I saw 3 really big does today as hot as it was around lunch time. Me and the wife are going to get the binoculars and ride around some this afternoon and see if we spot any. A friend said he saw a great buck a few weeks ago, unfortuneatly it was somewhere he cant hunt. If i see anything today i will let you know. Im in Hardy county, i may ride over to Hampshire and look around some too.

RE: Any bucks in WV
Ive probably seen at least 10 or 12 bucks in the last few weeks. I only saw like one little four point all summer long. The biggest was a 8 point tht was even with the tips of his ears and pretty tall. The worst part about that buck was that i saw him on what used to be family land where i have hunted since i was a kid. My uncle sold the land after last season and now i see a buck like that standing like 50 yards from the road in what used to be my grandmas back yard. Last week i saw a small 8, yesterday a really tall 6, almost ran over 2 identical spikes today and saw another basket rack 8 on the way home from work. I have been helping my dad do some construction about 30 miles from home over in Hampshire county and have been seeing at least 2 bucks a day to and from work. I went from not seeing any to seeing some everyday. I just wish i could still hunt my grandmas land that was the biggest buck i have seen over there since i was a kid.

Hey I got land in webster countyand last time i was there every morning I had over 20 deer in the yard and 7 were bucks. I took a ride at 1 pm in the afternoon and in 9 miles seen 30+ more deer. And wont even get to hunt. Oh and 5 bear.

RE: Any bucks in WV
I live in the southern end of the state Monroe Co to be exact. I have seen a few small racks but not as many as in previous years. Here all the farmers will say is he!! no you cant hunt. Plus the coyotes have taken a hugh toll on the herds. Last year I had 4 bucks in my yard several times but I think all of them were taken during gun season (not by me) I did take a nice doe with my bow for the freezer. So far this year only one buck in my yard a small 4 point. I havent been able to get ot a lot yet but hope to soon.

RE: Any bucks in WV
Seen several nice racks already. Number of deer has deceased due to previous bag limits.
