Default Vermont Black Bear ?

Where are the best places to find bear in Vermont? I have hunted them over the past few seasons and have yet to see one bear. I have hunted in Topsham, Groton St. Forest and Pine Mountain WMA. I really haven’t seen that much sign either. I don’t use dogs, just spot & stalk. Any suggestions for next season?

Thanks,
Tom

Tom~
It is really tough to hunt a bear that way. I used tohunt with a friend that had bear dogs and we would go around the northeast kingdom. There are a lot of bears up there, but those things put on some miles and mostly at night. They move around as quite as a cat and have an unbelievable nose. Your best bet is a tree stand in an apple orchardor around some choke cherries.

If you get a bear still hunting or in a stand, you've earned it. Good luck.

Tom...contact game wardens in the area you would like to hunt. Bears can do a lot of crop damage ( they can do alot of damage to a corn field ).
Some farmers complain to game wardens about crop damage....So you might get a good hint on where to hunt....hope that helps. In early Sept ,I have hunted power lines on known bear crossing.....No luck, but a nice view.

Another good bet is to hunt the beech ridges on years when there are nuts. Any remote and bearing apple trees in the northern half of the state should attract them. I hunt Caladonia county and usually manage to see one or two per season.

Champlain Islander, I grew up in Caledonia County. I know there are bears there, but I never saw one. I moved to Chittenden County and have seen several bear and shot one. I have also seen them in the Jay area off RT 105.
