No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
Am I the only one that is doing this????
|
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
I've shot some in VT, but usually only while I'm hunting soemthing else. I now live in NH and was in the woods this weekend and came upon a bunch of deer furwith coyote tracks all around in one of my favorite spots. So I am declaring war!
How do you hunt them? I'm not interested in going out at night, but would like to try and calll some in. Let me know. |
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
VT: my first reply didn't take so lets try again. I go out during daylight and call yotes, I have a primos ki-yi, lil dog and a crow call. I drop some bait (table scraps) to get them all fired up for an area and pretty much cross my fingers. I am fairly new to the sport so I am still learning. I use a .17hmr for now until the scope mounts come in for my .204. I also have access to 2 big peices of property in VT. to hunt on. Even If I dont shoot anything, I still like to be out. I do hunt at night but only if I have the next day off. Have you hunted yotes before???
|
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
I rarely go out specifically for yotes, but have shot at least ten while out deer hunting. Several around Lowell (we have a camp there) and even one with my bow in Georgia, VT. Pretty proud of that one, made a nice shot.
I like to get out in the woods andthis would give a good excuse to spend more time out this time of year. I see electronic calls are legal in NH, ever used one? |
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
VT: no I have never used a E-caller, I have read alot about them and it seems that the effective ones are big bucks!! so I have not stepped up to one of those. I really wanted to master mouth calls first. But exactly what you said, It gives me an exuse to be out in the woods this time of year and I am really looking foward to some Nice weather spring hunts also. I have been kinda interested in a motorized decoy but I am having a hard time deciding on one..

RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
Hey guys..
I used to hunt foxes up in the Lebanon area but moved and hadn't had the opportunity to go out for many years. Bought the new Foxpro just before Thanksgiving and have been having a ball with it. Called a really nice coyote up near Warren just after Thanksgiving. He was staring hard at the decoy as I proceeded to miss...go figure huh? Haven't been out recently though but plan on getting out a bunch starting the end of this month.. UB |
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
unclebuck: you missed?? whats the deal?? Oh well, better luck next time! so you really like the E-caller? I am still trying to master the mouth calls Before I step up and drop the frog skins on an E-caller. I have to make it up north to do some yote hunting, I have been after them down here and been having a heck of a time. Any good spots that is public In your area? Warren, thats off 89 right? I used to go to a lake (private) that was in Warren I think.. Blaisdell lake...

Check out www.predatormastersforums.com
Lots of predator hunters in New Hampshire over there. Lots of good advice as well. |
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
I had an older caller that had 50ft of speakeer cord, was a B&*$% to carry and set up and was generally a pain to use. It was however better than the original caller I used back in the late 70's with a friend in PA that ran 45 records (wonder how many kids even know what those are today..lol)
The new caller I got is the foxpro fx-3 and I couldn't say enough good about it. From the customer support and the quality of the equipment it really makes things so much easier than it used to be. i combined it with the JIB decoy and it is a really nice set up. We have had a ball with it since I got it between crow hunting, fox hunting and the coyote that jumped the bullet..hehe. Have a friend who hunted with me in Nov with the new caller and he liked it so much he bought one...and shot a nice bobcat with it down south the second time he was out with it. I'm taking mine to Texas next week for a couple days to see how it works without the snow and cold..hehe... UB |
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
I hunt NH, southern mostly. Have only been out once this season with no luck on 3 sets.
I plan on getting out more now that the holidays are over. I've done ok in NH, with some coyote and fox success. All on hand calls. Howling later in January has resulted in many of my best coyote hunts. |
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
thanks for the link Rick James, Uncle Buck, I cant believe you used to use 45 records for calling!! thats funny! I will take a look at the foxpro's.
MA JAY: I am hunting southern also, but have been having the toughest time, They are just not budging for me!!!! I guess I will try an all nighter to see what is moving when I should be sleeping... You say you have had some success in NH, you must be lucky or know something that I don't. OK guys thanks for all the good info.. |
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
I've been getting better with the more experience I've been picking up.
The big thing for me is "spots". Finding productive areas you can hunt, that are close together that allow you to string together a "hunt" helps a lot. Also, take care setting up. Making to much noise setting up will bust you.. and if you can find a partner and have them set up at least 50 yards downwind, you'll do better. They love to circle down wind and you'll be amazed at how many you actually call in but they wind you long before you ever saw them. Water... I have had my best coyote success near waterways for some reason. I've even shot 2 on the ice itself as they used frozen streams/rivers to come in. I seem to average 6 "sets" per success if that helps. You may go on a good or poor run every once in awhile, but it seems to average out to 1 per 6 for me at least. |
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
MA JAY: 1 success for every 6 aint to bad but I am like 0 for 8 at this point!! I gotta a couple more tips today that I will try and I will also try going closer to water, there are alot of swamps were i hunt so I'll try to get closer and watch those. thanks for the info. P.S. what are you shooting them with?????

RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
Liked the link Rick James. It is interesting that some of you have found these coyotes near water also. I was out Monday and they were a lot of coyote sign near a lake. I have never called them, but always thought you just used a call to imitate a injured rabbit. There are calls to howl also?I got to could get into this.
|
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
VT: oh ya there are calls to make all kinds of noises, howls pup distress, female mating call, challange howl locate howl, help I've fallen and I can't get up howl<---ok I made that one up. But go to www.primos.com and look at the randy anderson collections. I have a couple of them and If you have any sort of lungs then your good to go!!! good luck

RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
.204, I hunt with a 22 mag and Trusty Rusty (mossberg 500) using #4 buck down here in southern NH. I use a Rem 700 .223 out in the Jaffrey area and north of Manchester.
|
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
MAJAY: thats cool, as you can probably tell I have a new .204 and would like to use it more, I actualy live in manchester and do some or maybe most of my hunting In Derry - londonderry - chester area. Having a hard time at the yotes in these areas! and I am originaly from just outside of boston. good luck

RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
In my opinion you are heading in the wrong direction for the best coyote action. While I have had some success in the Chester area, I find either heading towards Northwood or out 89 towards Hillsboro I get more room and more coyotes. I'm down off of 13 just south of Milford, and while we have a lot of coyotes around here I have greater success in the areas I mentioned.
Good luck with the .204, it looks like a great gun on paper. |
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
MAJAY: well I recently bought a explorer from hillsboro ford and the sales man was saying that everyone in the dealership hunts and the area had alot of good spots. The only problem with doing that is that I just don't wanna aimlessly get out of the truck and go into the woods, I dont wanna make anyone mad if i stumble on private land or something. I guess if its not posted then its ok but still. some of those back woods guys get pretty pissed if someones on their Turf!! But I do wanna try some bigger areas.
I know a guy who owns a big farm in chester, you might now it, it is called spring pond farm its on 102 on the right if your coming from derry. I am gonna stop by to ask his permission. I'll let you know what he says. I hunted deer there before. |
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
I missed the other day on one that was out close to 200yards with my 22 Hornet :(The farmer told me they butchered a cow Christmas day and the Coyote were all over it that night. He could heard them howling and barking all night all! It took them 1 day to clean up that carcass. He's going to call me in another week of so when they're ready to butcher another cow.
I'll going to be readythis time and try toslam a few with my turkey thumper ;) Coyote are all over this guys huge farm and it loaded with open fields, great for spotting them. A few good spots up in Hillsboro that I have yet to hit. Browning.204, I'll PM ya my number if you're interested in going out sometime? I've got a Loman electronic caller and a mouth call but no decoy, I'm working on that one. I just ordered new winter camos and a wrap for my rifle in hopes it will help me bust a few :) |
RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
MK-M-GOBL ( I can only imagine what that means) heehee WoW to bad that you missed that shot. I wish there were still farms like that around me but now they are all houses!!! That sounds good if you wanna hook up but as long as I won't slow you down!!! I mean with questions and stuff, I always try to learn new stuff. Just tell me what I need to bring (other than the obvious) and its done. Email me if you want and we will talk more about it in detail. I think you can get it from my profile, if not i'll pm you.. thanks

RE: No one Hunts coyote in NH?????
If you don't have table scraps, open cans of dog or cat food and put it in ziploc bags. Get the cheapest, smelliest stuff you can. you can smear some on the trees to get the smell of it into the air. Then, put all your baggies in a clean bag and put them in your backpack. Don't litter and good luck.
