Sproulman is correct on one point.Maples will shed out the light for oak seedlings and sadly, that's the case all accross the east coast.Beech, birch and maple are slowly taking over our forests because of the lack of forest fires.Regardless, the carrying capacity of our forests have gradulayy declined to the pouint where it is now.Planting foodplots on piplines won't do squat.the deer have plenty to eat in the summer. Most of the damage is done in the winter when the deer are forced to feed on browse because the can't dig through the deep snow in the winter.
I hunted Cameron county, near Sinnemahoning on the last day this year. That area is practically strait up and down but the tops are flat and the sides have benches on most places just below the top.I hunted a south facing slope that was logged in 2001.It's so steep that they had to air lift the loggs out with a helicopter. In any event,I saw about 20 deer by 10:00am and harvested a big doe.I had no guilt shooting that doe either. The regeneration that was coming up after that area was logged was hammered. At this point, the only thing making itpast the deer was black birch. That area is steep and hard to hunt so it doesn't get alot of pressure.I suspect in a few years I'll start to se very few deer in that areas. Not because of an overharvest but because there won't be any food in that area during that time of year.
