Delaware Deer everywhere

I was chopping corn stalks Sat behind the combines and deer were running across the fields in front of me all day. Most of them were large does, all healthy looking. This was in Smyrna, DE in a field next to the Boondocks Restaurant. After leaving there and going over to M&M Farms, state wildlife tract, there were even more deer over there. Within a day or so we are going to be at the Woodland Beach tract, picking corn , that should be fun as well. They were a bit confused , having lost all of their cover, finding new paths, being exposed. Did not see any wall hangers.

Dropped off some goose decoys at our pit today and noticed some crop carrying trucks along Woodland Beach. Looked like they were just waiting for the combine to come along. Wish it would have happned a week or so ago. Dont see myself being able to get there again before Muzzleloader season kicks in

Get them when the rut kicks in though....

Hey Scott we finally got it picked, I finished chopping stalks this morning, then went across the road. We have one more good size farm to do then we will finish corn 3200 acres. Whoa finally, then plant 2500 acres wheat . The boys saw a few small does at the Ennis farm, not any size but a lot of them. I didn't work on
Sunday so I dont know much about size. Only saw one today next to Ennis". Get out when you can.....

it looks as if the bucks rstaying out of the corn during times that they know there coldbe danger. this means they r probably traveling back and forth in the evening...and night. i think i will look for trails around and in the perimeter of the swamp...thanks for the information

The big boys are indeed moving along edges of marsh and tide river around our farm. Our neighbors on both sides just cut their corn!!
No beans on either side of us this year,so the easy food supply is gone.
We cut 6-8 large lanes thru our field about now. That gets everything movin. We throw out some apples 2 weeks before season. Our place turns into a virtual bus stop between farms!!

Just found out that the corn is down on the farm I sub lease . Its the earliest he's ever cut it down! Now I have a place I can go during smoke pole season where I wont have to worry about drawing a stand or getting my head blown off by a bunch of lunatics After all the dissapointments this season, I'm starting to get excited again! Good Luck to everyone. I will be out and about Thursday afternoon. Too hot tomorrow..

Hey Ron, They maybe running everywhere when the corns being cut but they sure know how to hunker down when its hot! Was set at woodland by 4:15pm. Was the 1st person to hunt it since the corn was cut. All was quiet. I thought I'd at least see some moving through the woods, but nothing. It was hot today though. No reason for them to feed early. Bring on the cool weather!

You guys left a nice amount of standing corn for the deer Thats always nice too see. Thanks for the updates.

No I wasnt there Thurs or Fri,took a couple days off, today I mowed around the deer stands and cleaned them up .

RE: Delaware Deer everywhere

Went out today to do final touches on couple stands.Walked about 100yrds along edge of wood/marsh line for fresh rubs.Jumped a large body buck.Got a quick flash of unk size rack.

Deer around here seem to be in a nocternal mode.Done some riding and glassing at dusk around adjacent farms,S.Bowers and Milford Neck.Very spotty sitings. Its too freekin Hot!My observation idicates for the most part, deer are movin after dark! But - you can go down the road 10-20 miles and see deer everywhere.IMO it has much to do with -0%- human presence and food source.

About this time last year(mid, late Oct)the deer around here were in Pre or Full Rut. Go Figure??

RE: Delaware Deer everywhere

As long as it stays hot like this. we are not going to see many deer, they stay in cooler aresas too. I think Temperature has almost everything to do with lbringing on the rut, that and shortness of daylight, it is a natural phenonemon that deer relate to.

RE: Delaware Deer everywhere

AJ52, how r u??? do u tend to find alot of rubs in areas along the edge of the marshes??? if so, what type of trees do u find them on???

lemond33 10-05-2002 05:27 PM

RE: Delaware Deer everywhere

ron..i stated in a previous posting that the weather patterns as we knew it growing up, will probably never return. prepare for warmer weather going forward. the rut will b bought on by the shorter days and the fact that there will b alot of BADUSSY. the does will come on and u know how we r when there is some trim "in the House". what i would suggest to all is this...take off the second week in november and sit all day....pack a lunch and such. u will score because, as u know, they will b cruising...at any time. if u cannot sit all day because of your physical conditioning...u have 3 weeks to get in shape...it will be worth it

lemond33,
Around here(Lower Delaware,E.Shore Md.)the big old boys work the edges of woodland marsh. When pressured they will lay deep in marsh, frag, small islands far far away from human activity - They disapear!

They rub, tear up edge lines,"Destroy" pine and love anything in cedar family.Tend to set up breeding areas in these marshy wetlands, edges,
points,thickets,islands etc.Look for pines,cedars,fall downs,thickets.
We've watched does walk in and out of these areas to meet the buck of their dreams.

We've glassed big old bucks for hours on end, walk from river edge to island, checkin out the does - year after year this goes on!

Good Luck - AL

Anyway if you've got some wetlands marshes in your area - check em.

RE: Delaware Deer everywhere

al thanks for the info..the biggest problem i find in hunting these areas is the FINGERS of water. the crap is nasty. MUDDDDDD. i do not know if the deer even cross it. if they do, do they travel to the feeding fields everyday through that crap?? the mub in there is like quick sand. give me some feedback on how u hunt these areas. i have gone to a bigger head for a bigger entrance and exit hole. i am shooting 1 3/4 rockets and 1 1/4 muzzy's. i was in the marsh this evening...tracks everywhere:)

AJ52 10-09-2002 06:00 PM

RE: Delaware Deer everywhere

lemond33,
1st choice(If Possible)hunt from well placed stand on "edges".Stay away from ditches, fingers if possible. If not to wide deer will easily jump these small ditches.

If you walk out in these areas,BE CAREFUL.Some of the sink holes will swallow you up waste deep.Wear at least knee high boots.

You gotta get out to these areas WAY before season, scout for rubs, tracks, adjacent food supply, droppings, wind, glass the area at dawn dusk, etc.Look for high ground somewhere. They Are Out There!!

I have taken deer that came out of marsh with belly and legs solid black with marsh mud. When wise old Does and Bucks get pressured they will hunker down in these thick marshes(Heavier the Better). Many will lay in marsh grass and catch the afternoon Fall sun.

Some littlerly bury themselves in scrub brush, ditches, frag, islands. At dusk or after(Usually Hunter is Long Gone)up they POP outa nowhere!!

P.S. These areas are great if your huntin State Land. Not many guys will tread far into marsh.(sloppy, stinky, bugs, hard work).

Be Careful,Good Luck,Come Back with Good Marsh Buck Story. AL

RE: Delaware Deer everywhere

Aj, thanks ...great advice and u r right, the deer GHOST out of no where. i was hunting today at the back of a corn field..saw nothing, but i did find HOLES n the tall grass where they r coming to and from. i also found 4 ACORN trees..on had a stand in it and there were droppings everywhere. i will set my T2 up on that spot in coming weeks. i found an acorn tree and the acorns are really dark??? anyone know what type these are and if the deer are eating them. they r pretty big and there were droppings around the trees. persimmons are everywhere and the seeds are in the droppings. some are ripe already. i usually hunt them until nov. 2-3rd week. well, that's it, but more to come:)how n the heck am i going to drag a deer 1.5miles out of this stuff:)
