HEY NY!!!!!!!!
How about we talk about something other than the pending laws? It IS August you know......we should be checking out the local deer. Any potential out there seen?
Have my sights on a mature 6 point. Would be a heck of an 8, but he just can't seem to grow brow tines. I have him on film from last year. Looks like he might be a 3.5 yo. |
RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
hey Phade, long time no "see"
haven't even been in the woods yet. actually just got the bow out the other day. I really have been amazed on how few deer I've seen. I was on vacation and was up and golfling at 7am (6 times) and on the way to the courses didn't see 1 deer. I'm not worried, I know they are there. |
RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
all i've seen so far is a couple of does but i haven't spent much time yet
|
RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
All i've really been doing is scouting from the chevy. I see some nice wide bucks, about 4 of them with smaller bucks, but I can't get premission to hunt it. On the land I hunt they planted corn in the field and I have seen does working the edges which will give me a 30 yard shot from my stand. No bucks on the property yet. Last year I saw about 7 and I know that 7 where taken from the area but which ones I don't know.

RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!

RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
Hi Phade -
Did my first "Scouting Trip" tonight - sat in a 20 ft tree stand, listened to the Yankees go up 4 -0, then blow it! Video taped 5 bucks (largest was a 2-1/2yr old 14" 8point) and 4 does in the soybeans 200 yds out. It was a really great night - till the Yankees gave up 6 runs in the 5th!!!! Here's one I got my eye on: ![]() Can't see the 8th point on the right antler from this angle - its smaller than the left side- but there. FH |
RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
Shoot...I've been watching the locals bucks since the middle of June!I've seen some pretty good ones so far around the house here in NE Steuben County. I haven't spotted any real whoppers yet...the biggest I've seen are a couple in the 130" class range. I'm planning on breaking out the spotlight tonight and hopefully will get a look at some of the bucks that have been waiting until darkness to come out to feed. The bucks around herehave beenacting kinda weird for the past couple of weeks...they seemed to have just disappeared...I guesstheymust havegone nocturnal already. The deer that I really want to hang my tag on this season is a big 3 yr. old 7-pt. that I've been watching since the beginning of June. He actually looks quite alot like the buck in farm hunter's trailcam photo...he should be a P&Y class 8-pt. but only has a big fork on his right side. I'm guessing he's probably 18-19" inside and had around 8-9" G-2's the last time I saw him in the alfalfa field which was in the earlier part of July. I'm sure he's put on some more tine length since then. If he won't cooperate with me this fall...there's also four nice 2 yr. olds that hang out with him...3 are nice 8-pts. andthe other oneshould be a 8 but he doesn't have any browtines. I sure can't wait for October to get here.

RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
No big ones yet, but the cams are out so that should tell a better story. They are definately hitting the beans and soon enough the good apples and acorns that are outmy way in Catt. County.I found some good tracks last weekend setting a few stands, but they arejust not showing themselves yet.

RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
Good to see some of the reuglars still around.
FH- I'll be getting out for some stand scouting this coming week. What is the background of your cam pic? Looks like a creek? Doughboy- I've seen less deer at this point of the year than I ever have. But, I am hoping it is due to the corn planted on my hunting property. Hopefully they are there, I saw tons all winter. As soon as summer hit, and the corn got above a couple feet...they disappeared. Funny, they seem to do that during hunting season as well..:D BTW I have a small article in D&DH upcoming, as well as one of its sister publications. |

RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
farm hunter:
Good luck on your buck too. I'm not really counting on any plans right now. The deer around here have just seemed to vanish in the past few weeks...their feeding habits must have changed or something?Maybe it's the heat too...I don't know? That big7-pt. thatI mentionedhas disappeared....I haven't so much as caught a peek at him in 3 weeks. Prior to that I saw him consistantly since the beginning of June. My uncle saw him on his way in to work the other morning so I know that he's still around.I can't figure it out...none of the other bucks have been coming out to feed in the alfalfa either, although I did see adecent2-yr. old6-pt. that I've never seen before out there this morning. The fields right by the road so maybe it's a good thing that the bucks aren't out there advertising themselves...I sure wouldn't want any unwelcomed guests showing up come October. |
RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
I'm ready to go....is it opening day yet?

RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
I never really hunted northern teir much but I wanna hunt soo much that I am gonna this year....Sept. 27th better get here quick.

RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
I finally got outto do a little spotlighting last night. Overall, it was pretty disappointing....I only saw 10 bucks, a bunch of does/fawns and a lot that were too far a way to tell. Usually, you see anywhere from 30-60 bucks on this route. The biggest buck of the night was abeautiful 9-pt with really long G2 and G3's. I'd guess he'llgrossin the mid-130's and woulda went 140 if he had a matching G4 on his right side. I'm pretty sure that I have some video of him from last summer. There was also agreat looking heavy racked 2-yr. old 10-pt. with him. He'll be a slammer if he makes it for a couple more years.
This morning I checked out the alfalfa fieldby the house at first lightagain andfinally managed to get agoodlook at "my" HAWG 7-pt. It 's the first time I've laid eyes on him in a month and he's done some growing since then.Helooksto be agood 18-19 inchesinside with around 10" back tines, good massand really longbeams that curve up at the ends. He looks kinda funny with just a browtine and a huge fork on his left side. There's no way that you'd think he was only a 7-pt. when you first see him...he's without a doubt the largest 7-pt. that I've ever seen. I've got 4 stands in the area...hopefully I'll find myself in the right one at the right timethis fall. There were 3 other bucks feeding out there there this morning too...a couple of the 2 yr.olds and an exceptional little palmated 9-pt. yearling with really long browtines and aforked, common basebacktine on one side. I sure hope that little guy is still around in a couple of years. It won't be too long before they start polishing their racks up...the velvet looks kinda dull and grayish colored now, not dark and shiny like it was a month ago. The bucksseem to begetting a little more annoyed at each other now too. The little 9-pt. went up and sniffed one of the 8-pts. a couple of times and he was giving the "look" and ran off both times. Then the8-pt. proceded to get a little too close to the big 7 when he was feeding and he let out a loud snort and chased the 8-pt. for a few yards before he started feeding again. Both are good signs that fall is on its way. Seeing that bigboy this morning has sure gotten me fired up...like I needed the extra encouragement! :D |
RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
i have not really been out as much as i would like but did manage to see a large group out in a bean field. most of my scouting will start in hot and heavy once i get out in the woods to do some hunting for those lil bushytails:Dnothing like stalking the woods looking for tree rats and seeing a buck or two

RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
Are you talking bachelor groups?
It's funny, because I usually see them all the time, but this year....every buck I have seen has been solitary. |
RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
the group which i saw had several doe and yearlings in the center with five bucks hanging out along the edge. as far as i could tell all but one buck where fairly young... the largest of the group looked to be a 4 or a five year old with the others being between 2 to 3 years... please understand i am not a biologist and these are just a rough guess at best.
|
RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
LOL, nobody will give you a hard time about that.:DSounds like you do indeed havea good bachelor group going. Even looks like it has the typical set up of different age classes. Hopefully they don't disperse too far. Good luck!

RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
I haven't looked too hard at the camp I belong to. I was up there a month ago to check out the water damage to the roads, and the deerflies were coming in squadrons. We need to do a lot of work on the roads, but we do have a loader and a dump truck . . .

RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
Today got my blood pumping...finally.
While visiting family...it doubles as my long range scouting. My hunting grounds surround their house. Saw two shooter bucks in an alfalfa field, and a field behind the house I saw 4 fanws with 3 does. One buck is a six that I have seen before, the other is a nice 8 pointer. Might be a 2.5 yr old, but very healthy rack. |
RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
Well...the big 7-pt. has been showingup in the alfalfa field on a regular basis again, but since the field is highly visible from the road, it's usuallynot untilvery last light or right at daybreak. I've been trying to get some video of him and theseveralyounger 8-pts. in the bachelor groupfor the past two evenings .The 7-pt. is now in his dark winter coat and appears to be fat and healthy from all the alfalfa he's been eating this summer. I'm expecting to see him without velvet on his antlers any day now. The rest of the younger bucks / does in the area still have a pretty reddish tint to their coats. The chilly mornings sure are getting meworked up about bowseason which isstill 51 days away. I guess I'll have to take my frustrations out on some bushytails next week. Anyone out there seen any "hard horn" bucks yet?
|
RE: HEY NY!!!!!!!!
I am in Catt county and things are looking pretty slow. The early apples have dropped and they are actually rotting on the ground. These are normally eaten within 24 hrs.I think it is going to be a ittle more challenging this year.
