If there's one thing I HATE it is to see children being used by ther parents!!!

Just Kidding Thats a great way to spend time with your kids and keep their interest in the 'ways of the outdoors' I use to go to our abandoned hog shed with a 10/22 full of .22 shotshells and 2 clips waiting in my pocket!! Felt like RAMBO!!!! haha. You literally just flung the door open and started shooting at the rat holes...they'd run into the shots

We just went out again... He shot a monster rat. The thing was as big as a small cat!!! It did a couple flips squeeled and then ran off. It was cool to watch the boy blood trail it, he actually gets real serius about getting the rats. This one got into a hole and could not be recovered.

Daniel Boone would have dug that "meal" out of the hole. You shouldn't waste such a great resource.
.....just kidding...it sounds like a lot of fun. Good luck the rest of the season. Are there liberal limits on rats this time of year?
