RE: Heads up Kansans, Head of KDWP pushing economics
Hope this doesn't upset to many Kansas hunters but I am all four unlimited non-res tags in Kansas. We Missourians give Kansas that option every year and its about time Kansas returns the favor. I for one say Go Hayden!
Ps. can you recommend a good place to deer hunt in Kansas for next fall :) |

Mike4Elk...Please, please take back your "option" that you speak of. I don't want it and know few who do. We have some of the best land and best herds to hunt whitetail deer in the world and that is largely in part because we kept out-of-staters "out" for so long and kept our herds in tact, but now also by managing the number of non-residents allowed to hunt here. Just because your conservation department has their head up their bung hole doesn't mean we should follow your lead. Close your borders, I don't want to hunt a state that has guns slingin' lead all over creation during the heat of the rut while the bowhunters and their bows collect dust waiting for the seige to end and all of the bucks dissiminated leaving little left in the way of quality animals to pass on quality genes. What a shame! And you all boast of record harvests every year...what a joke! Give it a few more years and the overall quality of bucks in Missouri will resemble places like Pennsylvania and other states back east with poor herds. Then if we have unlimited tags for non-residents, all the jokers from MO will come over to our paradise and desecrate it because you have no quality deer left to hunt!! I'll resist it to the end!!!
P.S. You want to know of a good place to hunt in Kansas? How about in the middle of the Kansas River? Lots of big bucks skulking there from what I hear! Edited by - wolfen68 on 02/28/2002 10:02:45 Edited by - drache on 03/04/2002 10:56:57 |

MoBow...I have been in dozens of cities in the US and overseas twice in my life and there are many beautiful places out there, many much more beautiful than Kansas so let me clarify what I mean when I say "paradise". When I say "paradise" (for you remedial types)<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> I am speaking in terms of a "hunting" paradise. Kansas is a TOP state in producing quality deer in their native habitat and they have had and hopefully will continue to have an effective, intelligent, and proactive Department of Wildlife. Oh, and MoBow, I used to have a friend that lived in Lone Jack so I've seen your neck of the woods numerous times...and soon I think I'll get that stench out!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle> And the whole "woman with PMS" comment I thought was pretty funny as well especially coming from a bearded monkey such as yourself! LOL!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Heads up Kansans, Head of KDWP pushing economics
You know, not every Tom, Dick, and Harry would want to hunt in Ks. if everyone that lived there didn't come out tell everyone that Ks. is a "hunting paradise", so that's what you get when you're on here telling the world how great the quality of deer is there. I'll be there again and again, even though it saddens me a bit that the outfitting businesses are the ones they will be reaping the benefits of the large portion of out-of-staters when they allow more tags. There is alot of public land, but if there are more tags available to the o/s hunters, then the outfitters will be leasing more and more land from the locals. I wonder, are they going to allow more tags for all forms of hunting, such as rifle, muzzleloader, bow.
Oh, by the way, there are no good quality bucks in N. Central Ks., those that Ks. Hunter shows I think came from down around where Wolfen68 hunts! |

RE: Heads up Kansans, Head of KDWP pushing economics
Welcome to Illinois, guys.
We do have alot of the same probs. but we do have a cap on NR permits, but who knows for how long. Outfitters are an epidemic here, and finding(more importantly KEEPING) hunting land has become a struggle. Regardless of what some people(non hunters) think, unlimited NR tags and increasing land for outfitters does not inprove the economy. When you think of the % of people across the nation that are hunters, then the percent of those that would travel to Kansas, how much money do they think this will bring in? Can anyone name a state that can prove that NR hunting ALONE has improved the state economy a substantial ammount? NR hunting has been a real issue in the past few years here in IL, and things are not looking good for us. I have never gone out of state to hunt deer, and since I know how I feel about NR's, I probably wont travel for a deer hunt. Crap, you are right, ENJOY IT WHILE YOU CAN. |
RE: Heads up Kansans, Head of KDWP pushing economics
Crap...Imissed!, it was a joke and I know that posting how good the hunting is in Ks. here on this forum, or any other for that matter, isn't going to change the number of vistiors to Ks. much. I was just trying to yank Wolfens chain a bit. I hunt on the family farm not too far from Ks. Hunter's territory, and sad, or is it, to say, yes there are good bucks in that area. I guess it's a sign of changing times, some of the ground that I hunted while growing up was leased up last year, so I too see the impact of outfitters moving in. And Crap...Imissed, know offence taken, I may be west of the border, but my roots are still there!

RE: Heads up Kansans, Head of KDWP pushing economics
I've hunted Kansas the last 2 years and will continue to apply. However, if they go OTC I will not be going there anymore. The NR limit is the reason I go. There's no shortage of OTC states with crappy deer herds close to home. Sure hope the policies don't change significantly.

RE: Heads up Kansans, Head of KDWP pushing economics
I also hope kansas does not turn into an OTC state. It would bring money into the state, but also create a deer herd with less quality.
A couple years back I went to a KSHA meeting. And there was a big discussion on this topic since people from the ks department of tourism were also there. They said hunting was in the top 5 for money brought into the state and the top 5 for attractions in the state. So if somebody just wanted to bring money into this state, OTC NR tags would be a great way to do it. I just hope the KDWP looks at what it would do to quality of the deer herd first . Here in my county there isn't a lot of land that is leased for hunting, that i know of. I do hope it stays that way. ![]() |
