racewayking, Yes there is a lottery. I advise you to use the online application process and not rely on the postal service sending in permits by mail. You get a transaction record that you can use if you have any problems. All the information you need should be in the link I attached.

This is only my second year applying as a resident in the first lottery. Can anyone tell me what stratergy is good for a 2nd choice? I'd really like to draw something, even if a mediocre tag. However, I'm not sure how low to go. Anyone have experience on what types of special property tags have been drawn recently as 2nd choices?

Ya know, unless you are applying for pike ,or the other counties in the golden triangle you will most times get what you apply for. I have always got my first choice, but I always apply for Mcenry co., not alot of guys asking for that.

Also make sure your county has a antlerless bonus permit available. I don't know about other counties but Pope does not have bonus permits in the first lottery. I applied for one a couple of years ago and got a refund.
