That may be all she wrote...
My hunting season may be over as of now. I wanted to go yesterday, however, hubby went out Friday and had a hell of a time trying to get to the stand. Snow up to his waist, fell down 3 or 4 times, which resulted in him getting chilled to the bone. Said it's waist high in many places and is awfully hard to walk through. Of course yesterday brought chilling temps and a frigid wind with it, so that was out of the question. Today, I was going to attempt an evening hunt, but my ex husband called last night to tell me my kids have been throwing up all weekend and are coming home early tonight, so that is the end of that story. I will have one more chance to go, next Sunday. I can't guarantee I will be able to do that either, but for now, it will be my last chance and it may be over with for the year. :(
I only got the one small button buck during bow, hubby didn't get any, and there is a lack of tracks out there right now. **sigh** Oh well... maybe next year. Next year we will be in Michigan for season opener up there, staying at his dad's place way Up North and visiting all of the local buckpoles ot share the excitement with fellow sportsmen, I'm looking forward to that experience! |
RE: That may be all she wrote...
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you don'tforget about this place...
This year has been the best outdoors year ever for me. I can't wait to see what we land ice fishing the next few weeks. |
RE: That may be all she wrote...
I won't forget about this place......I'm not planning on going anywhere, I may slow down in posting, but I'll still be here. :DYou can't get rid of me THAT easily, Pat! [8D]
I will probably be turkey hunting in a few months, so I will definitely be checking in on that! |
RE: That may be all she wrote...
Where about will you be hunting in Michigan?
|
RE: That may be all she wrote...
Not for me I will be out until the last day. I did clean out 4 more does this weekend though. Giving the meat to some familes here at school to use. That is 11 does I have taken from there and it could stand to have 11 more removed. Oh well we have taken 19 off of there.

I'll hunt 3 or 4 days this week, not sure if im going to be able to hunt the last weekend or not. Im just looking to fill my bonus doe tag. I have been seeing 15-20 deer everytime out since muzzy started. I have been hunting from the ground atop a ridge overlooking 2 fields and they are showing up in the cut corn field everynight about 5pm and its a big herd. I took my wife last Friday after the heavy snow and about dark i looked up and had a doe running right to me from the field, she stopped 45 yards away eating off a twig, didnt have much time left so i took the shot that was presented and it was a clean miss. Further examination revealed a very small tree that had caught my bullet before it even got to the deer. I needed that deer to take about 10 steps and it would have been a perfect shot but she never moved once she got inside the woods. Im confident i will nail one here this week though.

Going to reduce somemore this week in Brown Co. A guy has a standing cornfield. The only one for at least 10 miles in either direction. He is wanting some does thined out. Its all going to the food bank

RE: That may be all she wrote...
I'm all hunted-out. Freezers are full of deer meat. Now it's ice fishing time.

I went out again last evening to the same spot, jumped 7 doe as i was walking in. Deer were moving the entire time i was there. About 4:30 the big herd i have been seeing sprinted out of the neighboring woods and into the guys field, this time they were much closer to me then what they had been. Anyways, this was the biggest herd of deer i had ever seen in my life. There were at least 25 deer in this pack, they just kept coming and coming and i couldnt keep up trying to count them all. Thought i saw a rack on one but couldnt tell for sure. About half of them finally crossed the fence and got onto the property i hunt, but they were about 200 yards out in the field. I snuck up to the fencerow and seen what looked like 2 bucks fighting, didnt believe it at first but they kept it up for a good 15-20 minutes and i could hear the racks smacking together. Dont think they were very big but it still was pretty cool. I did let 2 very small doe go that were about 30 yards from me, too many big ones out there that need to go.

Holy Moses! I am struggling to find the time to hunt, once I get there, it's a struggle to even SPOT a deer... argh. Hubby went Monday night, shot a doe, but we tracked for 1 1/2 miles in knee deep snow and couldn't find her, we went across at least 9 properties that we didn't have permission to be on, got out of the woods at 9pm, I guess it wasa lost cause, if she went that far, she obviously wasn't hit well. He's upset, so I guess he is hanging it up for the year. He hates losing deer, as do most hunters, makes him sick. By the time we walked 1 1/2 miles BACK to the truck, we were both hardly able to stand, literally. I could hardly breathe, it was awful, but at least we made a good go at it. She was hardly bleeding, just a spot every 100yds or so about 1/4" big... if there was no snow/tracks, we would not even have had a trail to follow. I think he just grazed her, we found some hair, but that was about it, it wasn't even bloody hair really. We got to a spot on one property where there were so many tracks we couldn't figure out which ones were her's with no blood. :(

Got another in Brown Co. last night. He has a serious problem with does. I saw 27. I then was going to my truck and saw 12 more. Then driving down the road I saw 10 more. I am heading there one last time tonight. The good news is it is over 200 lbs of meat that the kids here at school will get.

RE: That may be all she wrote...
Do you have any pics of all these deer?

I can't stand Lame(y). I've missed 2 games since '98. The last time we played the Steelers on MNF a few years ago, and the beat-down we got from the Jets in the playoffs...both losses.

RE: That may be all she wrote...
A picture of does? No.
|
RE: That may be all she wrote...
Well it doesnt look like im going to get to hunt today, 30mph winds with some snow showers and the police are reporting whiteout conditions and drifting snow because of the wind. Schools are closing early. Just maybe i can convince the wife now that a 4 hour drive down south of French Lick really isnt a good idea and then i can stay home and hunt this last weekend:D

Man, glad that wasnt us. I went to college in Grant Co. it was always worse up there, than we have here.
|
RE: That may be all she wrote...
They have advanced education in Grant Co?! OMG....
"A picture of does? No." We take pics of every deer we take...every one is a trophy. BTW, today sucked. Ice fished Loon and Webster.....VERY windy...about died a ½ dozen times. Got a few brim..that's it. To cap off this worthless day, I went to the bar and got smashed with a few buddies. Woo WOOOO |
RE: That may be all she wrote...
Well, this WEEK sucked for me. Starting it all off on Monday was the deer we couldn't find... then Tuesday, hubby came home from work very sick, then Wednesday he was still sick... then Thursday, Friday and today, *I* am sick. Been throwing up the last two days and now running a low grade fever, should probably be in bed, but oh well. Hubby is out Christmas shopping, so I got two kids who keep running to me with all the little "kid" stuff that is irrelevant to me when I feel like such crap. What REALLY sucks is tomorrow is the last day to hunt, and since I am home sick right now, I will have to finish Christmas shopping tomorrow and miss the last day. :(

What a TERRIBLE weekend all the way around. First, i couldnt get out of making the 4 hour trip down south this weekend, so there went basically all of the weekend for me to hunt. I had to listen to the Colts game on radio all the way home this afternoon, i get home just in time to see Manning get an intentional grounding call and then an 80 yard TD run by the Chargers.[:@] At this point its 10 after 4 and i hurried up to get in one last hunt with the muzzy. Before i even get set up on the ground on the ridge i had been hunting, i see deer moving everywhere in the woods beneath the ride. One was a buck chasing does. I was there for about 25 minutes max and 2 fat does were making there way right to me, the first one was walking straight at me up the ridge, it got to about 15 yards away and started to quarter and i shoot.....POP...the damn gun didnt fire[:@]. The deer took off about 40 yards or so in the bottom of the ridge right along the property line, it was my last chance so i put another cap on and shot, and the gun goes off this time but i knew i had missed the deer. Went down to check it out and all i found was a lot of hair on the snow. That really sucked, cant belive the gun didnt fire the first time, that deer was good as dead. Im going to try my luck with a bow for a few more weeks though, this is the first year i have ever done late archery, im still seeing a ton of deer and cant quit now. At least if i hit one with the bow i still have a good solid snowpack to track it in.

RE: That may be all she wrote...
Believe it or not there is a college there. Pretty trashy town though. And they even let me go there for free since I could put a round ball into a round hoop.

RE: That may be all she wrote...
I got Doe Sat morning. I took a picture. My buddy took 3 while hunting Sat and Sun. no pictures. THe good news is Wed is the last day of school. THe bad news is that gives me only about 80 more hours to hunt until its done for the year.
If you want to see the picture of the doe I can e-mail it to you. I took one of my regular season buck. I took another buck on a special hunt. I didnt take a picture but I think my buddy may have. I just need your e-mail address |
RE: That may be all she wrote...
It's definitely over now... coulda bow hunted til January, however I accidentally threw away my archery tag! [:@]:(
So, guess that's REALLY "all she wrote" until next October.... |
RE: That may be all she wrote...
I nearly threw my archery license away last week, luckily i kept it though. I didnt know that the early archery license was also valid for late archery until a few days ago, i thought you had to buy another license. Technically i could still kill 3 more deer becuase i also have a bonus license, im only wanting to take 1 doe though.

RE: That may be all she wrote...
A friend said he got a doe Sunday evening. Said it was sticking her nose in the snow, then flipping it up on her back. Never seen that before.
I might go out sometime next week..I'm off until the 3rd. |
RE: That may be all she wrote...
Ml ended sunday and I am not going to try to pull a bow with all of my heavy cold weather clothing on so I am done until next Oct.
|
RE: That may be all she wrote...
It's hard...but I have one of those bow exerciser things...much like a big rubberband.

RE: That may be all she wrote...
Well, i shot a big doe this afternoon about 4:30 with my bow, it was a 25 yard broadside shot and she tried ducking my shot and im pretty sure i hit her high, maybe even above the spine. She ran off tail ducked between her legs. I got down and found my arrow stuck in the snow with blood up and down it, also found hair all over the place. Started tracking and found blood about 15 yards from where i shot her, i followed a blood trail for about 100 yards, through a thicket and up to a fence crossing that goes onto the neighbors land. I could see the blood continuing over onto the other guys land. I stopped there for tonight and im going out with my wife in the morning to try to get permission to look for the deer. Not real confident about the shot but the blood trail wasnt all that bad, i would find blood every 5 -10 yards, some places it would be scattered in a circle about the size of bb's, and other places it would be the size of a 50 cent piece. Found a couple places where it was the size of a dollar bill. My arrow had just a few small pieces of tissue or something on it, not exactly sure what it is. Dont know if this deer will die or not but as long as i got a blood trail i have to keep looking.
