Default Switches for halogens

I am trying to put a switch on every one of my halogen lights. The problem is on the first one I tried I fired up the genny and it popped the breaker.

The switch has 2 wires comming from it. The light has 3 wires; black, white, and green. I tried to hook up the black and white to the 2 wires comming from the switch. I fired up the genny, the light was working, when I flipped the switch to off it popped the breaker on the genny.....

Any ideas????[:@][:@]

So... the light was ON. Then you hit the switch, and it turned OFF.

Sounds to me like it worked just fine....once. hee hee

I don't need no stinking torque wrench...
...besides, I LIKE making pitstops in Matoon and taking 5 hours to go 3 hours distance.
