if you've got extra money and want to save some space and weight, pick up MSR's MIOX water purifier. its not a filter, it injects a tiny bit of salt into the water and then sends an electrical charge through it. this kills pretty much anything. you can find them on pretty much any outdoor website like REI. i think it retails for $125.
