Info on a 12 ga. slug gun with a rifled barrel ??
I’ve purchased a new 12 ga. slug gun with a rifled barrel and a new scope. It’s time to sight it in. What would the normal distance to sigh in the this gun ? 50 yds,75 yds or 100 yds? I’m not sure so any advise would be appreciated.
Also what type of distance can I expect from a 12 ga. rifled barrel that would be affective and accurate enough to take down a deer ??

i agree that you can be pretty accurate out to 100 yards. i would recommend that you start at 25 yards to make sure you are on the target, then go to 50 yards, then out to 100. if you start shooting at 100 yards and your scope is not sighted in you will have no idea where you are shooting and can waste a lot of ammo. check the scope often to make sure it stays tight, 12 guage has a tendency to shake the crosshairs loose on a cheap scope.

Sight in your gun in the 40-50 yd range.
A 12ga has such broad frontal sectional density that these power houses really do not buck the wind very well and may give you false reading at the 100yd mark because of drift.
The maximun I would shoot a 12ga slug is 125yds, under near perfect conditions.
Good Luck

I think Trailer wants to know the optimal point blank range for his gun. Maybe I'm wrong though.
If that's the case, first you have to settle on your ammo. Once you pick the slug you will hunt with, I would site it in so it is never higher than 3" above the line of sight. That should give you a point blank range of at least 100 - 125 yds.
I would do my accuracy testing of different brands of slugs at 50 yds. to limit aiming error and wind effects. All things being equal (even though they never are) just multiply your 50 yd group size by 2 to get a good idea of what your groups would be at 100. I always go with the fastest slug that meets my accuracy requirements which for me is a 5" 100 yd group of 5. All my shots at deer seem to be at 75 yds and under.

Thanks for the additional information. I’m not sure on the type of ammo I will be using but all my questions have been answered and it didn’t even hurt !

All the above is a go. I would site in 2"- 2 1/2" high at 50 yds then try a few at 100 then test it at 75 and see where its hitting. You shouldn't have to make any major adjustments, maybe just some fine tuning. Then if you have a shell left before you leave pop one at 25 yds just for your piece of mind.

I just ordered a Simmons scope and mount from Cabelas this morning for my 12 ga slug gun. I will likely set it at 75 yards, as most of my shots will be between 50-100 yds.
