Depends what you're looking for. Generally I prefer buying rifles and ammo at specialized gun stores, but for clothes/backpacks/gear I'd watch some reviews and buy directly from whoever makes it( unless prices there are way higher than somewhere else).

you might also tend to stop at and browse yard sales rather consistently, and read through craigs list, you might find a few items,
like quality brand names REI back packs and SEVERAL NAME BRAND sleeping bags at remarkably low prices
Ive found several items like coleman camp stoves large coolers, lanterns and REI tents for about 15%-20% of the current prices
yes 75% of the time its a total waste of time, but the other 25% makes it worth the effort
