Looking at a Jan coues hunt in central AZ. How are these hunts typically in terms of safety, physical difficulty, difficulty of hunt (archery)? Wondering if I should be considering this or an elk hunt for a western trip. Don't want to bite off too much on this trip so was considering trying otc coues before saving points for elk in future.

Coues deer with a bow, while not impossible, is very challenging. Elk during the rut is constant close encounters and action. Not sure where you are from, but coues deer are no joke. The terrain is rugged and unforgiving....Rocky, steep, everything has thorns too! They are a tough trophy with any weapon. Plan on many hours of hiking and glassing. Best to be on your A game and have the best glass and boots you can afford.
