I've always wanted to get into hunting, but have never had the time, nor resources to get started. I'd like to get some opinions on a few things before getting started at all.

.22 rim fire rifle = Ruger 10/22 or Marlin model 60

12 gauge= Remington 870 or Mossberg 500

A beginner "one gun" .... a 20 ga. pump such as a Rem. 870 would be a good choice. Can use a 20 ga. to hunt about any game folks normally go after including white tailed deer. Most come with 2-3 choke tubes that can be swapped out to set you up for small game such as squirrels and rabbits, as well as wing shooting such game as dives and ducks. Full choke or special "turkey choke" and you are set for gobblers. For deer ... you can go with a rifled slug or buy a rifled barrel for use with sabot slugs(would be my suggestion).

If you intend to get into center-fire rifle for deer sized game or varmints, I suggest as Sheridan did a 22 LR. Single shot or bolt action. You can certainly learn how to shoot a "deer rifle" rifle by practicng with a 22 LR rimfire.

As far as what to start out hunting? I suggest small game such as squirrels and rabbits. Lots of fun, takes plenty of woodsman ship to get good at it and is some mighty fine eating.

Don't need much more than that to start out with except appropriate clothes and foot wear for the temps and terrain where you are planning on hunting. About any "woodsy" colors will do, or you can go the cammo route.

And yep, these days to legally hunt you'll probably need to pay the state a fee for a so called Hunter Safety Course.
