Hunting Boots?

Well for the last few seasons just huntin in my work boots and having my feet nearly turning into icesickles LoL I've decided to invest in some insulated huntin boots. Any recommendations on some good ones I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks

The best boots you can buy are the ones that fit right. Don't scrimp on price. Cheap boots will not last, and they will fail at the worst time.
I have had good luck with Wolverines.
I have also been known to "borrow" my wife's La Crosse boots from time to time.

the La Crosse Burlys are what ive been using for the last 4 yrs and they are great! i cant remember the last time my feet got cold in the woods, and even though i hunt in alabama ive been out in some pretty cold weather (6 to 9 degrees a couple days). They are great, I have also heard very good things about the Muck brand, thinkin about goin to them next time a need some. Cant go wrong either way in my opinion

There are any number of good unsulated rubber, or otherwise, boots out there. Do not scrimp on price. In boots, you do get what you pay for. You might think about getting one size bigger to allow for more socks. Also, sometimes it's not the boots. Wearing cotton socks will guarentee your feet will get cold no matter what boots you're wearing.

The best boot that I have come across for cold weather hunting (freezing temps or less) has been the Danner "Elk Ridge". These usually run about $200. I hunt a bunch and put my gear through it ... not abuse, but use. The pair I have now are 6 seasons old and still in great shape. Proper cleaning and leather treatment is necessary to longevity. The previous pair of Danners like these (all leather, insulated) that I had lasted only about 11 seasons. Oh darn ! The correct fit and using a high quality wool/poly blend sock are both other keys to warm feet. If you do a lot of sitting still, such as hunting from ground blinds or tree stands in very cold weather, give chemical "foot warmers" a try. I'll carry some and put them in my boot after I get settled in.

I have the type of feet that get cold very easily. For years I only wore the rubber hunting boots. I had a pair of La Crosse Alpha Burlys 1500 gram insulation. It was a good boot but my feet still got cold in the winter. Last year I decided to try something other than a rubber boot to see if it was any warmer. I got a pair of Irish Setter Snow Claw XT boots with 2000 gram insulation. I noticed a big difference in warmth between the rubber boot and this boot. Just something to look at. I think I paid about $169 for them.

I have these

LaCrosse Snake Boots.

They are uncomfortable right out the box (stiff as wood), but as they are worn in, they are comfy and warm. I bought a half size bigger than I needed to allow for my wool sock in the frigid South GA winters (ha ha).

And, an added PLUS......the very day after I bought the boots, after walking through some brush and looking down, there was a South GA cottonmouth staring up at me, 2 inches from my boot with his mouth wide open. I immediately thanked the man above for making me click purchase on amazon.com.

Hunting boots over work boots any day. Better yet, make em Snake boots.

Until 4-5 years ago, I only wore the La Crosse high top Burly boot. Wore their high tops for probably 20 years. But I always found them clamy and sometimes difficult to get on and off. So the next pair I needed to buy, I Googled boot reviews and found that many people loved their high top Muck boots. So I went to Cabeas and tried a pair on. Now I sleep with them on!.... :>)

ive got a pair of the muck arctic sports.comfortable boot, but your feet will still get damp from sweat in any rubber boot.if its colder than 30 or 31 degrees,my feet start to get chilled in these boots.i got a set of the arctic shield boot covers to go over my boots and now i can sit for hours in the low teens.they fold up and fit in a coat pocket and i NEVER have to worry about cold feet running me out of the tree.a chemical handwarmer tossed in the boot covers makes it even better.check ebay for the arctic sports, thats about as cheap as you will find em.they are the same boot as the woody max, just black in color.

well..i got some lacross knee high snake bite boots..at first i gave em a bad review cause they were stiff as all get out..but after bearing with them, cause i had too, cause i told my wife they were the best lol....they seemed to have loosened up a bit and are more comfortable then they used to be. if i bought a new pair, i wouldnt get lacross. and i need the snake boot, especially october in texas.

If I am sitting I wear Schnee pack boots on stand. If I am walking a little and sitting or really wet I wear Muck boot. If I am on the move I wear leather lace up boots such as Danner, etc.

So it depends on your usage.

Socks are an important part of the equation as well: polyproplene sock liners and merino wool socks are a must if your hunting in cool temps. Also if your sitting for long periods unlace your boots and make sure you buy boots with lots of wiggle room in the toes.

agreed. For midwestern whitetail hunting, I've actually had very good luck with cabela's brand boots, warm and cold. In the warmer months I used to use the rubber comfort track boots, they are surprisingly tough and very comfortable. When I was guiding whitetail hunts in Illinois I had one pair last 4 seasons of pretty rough, EVERYDAY use. And that includes hanging/moving 60-75 stands a season which is hard on a boot. For the colder hunts I bought a pair of Cabelas Predator Extreme Pac Boots. These things are great, I stand hunt exclusively and my feet never get cold with the proper socks. they are a little bulky but you get used to it and it leaves a lot of room inside so your toes stay warm. There are pockets to put chemical warmers in the toe area too, but I've never needed to use them. It took me years to break down and buy these...that was dumb, they are worth the money for sure!

I have had good luck with Irish Setter Big Game GTX w 800 gr thinsulate. Unfortunately, they don't make them anymore, but I'm sure they have something equivalent. The Shadow Trek may be similiar.

I bought some Danner Pronghorns (400 gr thinsulate) last year for a bridge between the Irish setters and snake boots, and they are very comfortable, but they leaked right out of the box. Several applications of waterproofing seem to have stopped that, but we will see this next season.

Hunting boots in cold weather?

Insulated and definitely has rubber on the bottom of the boots.

Sitting in the cold for awhile always makes the feet get over 10 degrees colder. It's not the walking; its the sitting on a stand that becomes unbearable with regular leather boots.

Incidentally, I still have an "heirloom" pair of Kaufman Sorel boots. that are wearable.

shottyhunter24 09-10-2011 09:00 AM

Baffin boots, the right pair rated up to -200 degrees.....'nuff said
