Hunting Boots
Can anyone give me a brand-style of boot to get for hunting that are quiet? I recently just purchased Rocky Timberwolf 800 insulate and they are noisy in the field(real aggressive soles and bulky). They pick up everything and walkin in rocks or anything will make anything hear you. So what is nice boot that that wont grip to everything and wont create a ruckus!) thanks

I have been searching for boots since my last post. I keep looking back at these http://www.outdoor-headquarters.com/...e=rockyoutdoor. I also was looking at http://www.outdoor-headquarters.com/...kyoutdoor.They look as if they would be QUIE, with it saying in the description flexible and not bulky. Would anyone agree or have any other boot i should look at?

I have found that the quietest soles are air bob soles and they also give the best grip on the most different type of surfaces. They are softer than most types of soles and tend to flex and absorb inconsistencies. Vibram type soles just dig in and won't flex unless really well worn/broken in. Step on a stick with airbob soles and it may not break but with a vibram type sole it will. Also if your on alot of rock the air bob soles wear very rapidly and can get expensive. Hope it helps.

All leather Wolverines, with the airbob sole. Had mine for two years now and wondering still why I didn't get a pair sooner.

Not sure where you are from but I use LaCrosse rubber here in Vt for deer hunting and ice fishing. The quality IMO has gone down hill since moving mfg to china so I bought a pair of Muck Woody max this year. They are very comfortable, light and warm. I will see how warm they are out on the ice when we get some. Very quiet walking with a good tread. They probably wouldn't have the support for out west and when I go there it is Danner

I have been using Chippewa and Ross Allen for years......Many rattlers in Florida........

Think i got it narrowed down to two pairs. Either http://www.outdoor-headquarters.com/...e=rockyoutdoor . or http://www.outdoor-headquarters.com/...e=rockyoutdoor. Any input on either of these?

Not sure where you are located but hopefully you will get to try them out in a store or better yet at the factory store in Nelsonville OH. Most posts I have seen are pretty critical about Rocky boots now that they are made in China. I went to the fatory store and I couldn't believe how uncomfortable they were and I tried several boots in different styles because they were pretty cheap. This is a forum about boots and you asked for opinions and I am saying IMO they aren't even close to being what I would wear. If you need leather or synthetic waterproof boots there are many other brands that would be better.

Hey Champlain Islander thanks for you input. I am located in Arizona, so the terrain i go is desert to pine to you name it. I like the looked of the two previous Boots(Rocky) that i linked. I have also read about them falling apart, and that is why i am trying to find a different brand with similar look or style. Do you no of any that are similar?

By the way.....I now wear the LaCrosse Brawny Extreme 1200 gram Thinsulate boots. Very light, quiet AND warm. I'm on my second pair. First pair lasted me about four years. Doug B. |
Thanks Doug. I have heard a lot of upset comments about Rocky boots. But i am definently checking out the ones you have.

For boots I will stay with my Russells - South 40s non insulated and then the insulated pair.
1 pair of south 40 I still wear and have since 1994.......think I got my money out of them for sure. JW |
Check out Irish Setters. I now have 2 pairs of them and are very happy with them. I also would not buy boots without Gortex lining in them if it were me whichever brand you choose.
www.shoebuy.com has some reasonable prices and free shipping. I bought a pair of Rocky 1000gram Super Brutes about 12 years ago. I still wear them from time to time in season and they have held up. I recently (last year) purchased a pair of Rocky Bear Claws(I think) about a year ago and they didn't make it through one season, I felt like crying not just cause I got ripped off but because a product I preached about how good they were to anyone who would listen completely let me down. |

What do u guys think of these.http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...c-000423bb4e79

Looks good and they are probably made for Cabelas by Irish Setter. Price is good but the tread isn't what I would want in a hunting boot if you were in rocky slippery or steep terrain. Sounds like you are in more of a piney semi arrid situation so they might be good. The beauty of Cabelas is if you don't like them send them back. A couple of years ago I bought a pair of their rubber 2000 gram insulated rubber boots for ice fishing and they cracked at the ankle after 14 months of ownership ( I used them about every day for the 3-4 month season). I complained and they requested that I send them back for evaluation. They sent me a full refund which was pretty good. I wouldn't buy a pair of leather boots without trying them on though. If you are going to buy from Cabelas, Bass Pro, Sportsman's Warehouse or whatever go to the store. I know right away if a pair of boots is good just by trying them on and walking around. Buying a pair of boots and having to break them in isn't the way I like to do it. Some boots just plain fit and when you try on different brands you will see the difference.

I'll second Irish Setters. I have a pair (don't remember which model) that I bought for $48 when the local Sportsman's Warehouse was going out of business three years ago. Very comfortable, don't leak, and easy to walk in.

Try out the Danner pronghorn boots, I used mine on my Antelope and muley hunt down in an area similer to Arizona in southern Alberta. Plains area and hilly full of ravines. They reacted well to all the miles I put in and at days end were dry as could be. Walked through a lot of water that week and they never developed leaks so the Gortex did it's job and the price is reasonable to. The grip is great and what a person needs for the climbing terrain and all the shale that I encountered. Give them a try. Rocky |
The reviews look good !!
I use Cabela's stuff and find them to be the large brand name item without their tag on it (Cabela's tag instead). However, for rubber boots I use Lacrosse. |
I've been researching the same thing because I was A fool and bought Chinese made Rockey Boots that were not cheap, says waterproof right on them and I darn near lost my toes in snow because they were not waterproof, not even close to waterproof! I didn't stand in water, although you should be able too, I waked in about 8" of snow with new waterproof boots. After 45 minutes in the snow, my feet were soaked and cold with my truck 45 minutes back.
I called Rockey boot Co. , I wrote Rockey Boot Co. and got no where. I had 1 employee tell me "waterproof doesn't mean you can stand in water." and,"You need to spray them with sylicone if you want them to be waterproof." I filed a complaint with the BBB and Consumer Protection Agency and basically got no where. Never again will I buy Rockey Boots. I saw those Scent Blocker Bone collector boots on TV. Almost every honest review I've seen for these say not waterproof. Apparently waterproof has a different meaning in China? I could waterproof my tennis shoes with silicone spray, that's not waterproof, that's maybe water resistant? Rockey Boots used to be made in the USA as Lacrosse Boots and many other American made products but are now all made in China. So far for a Rubber hunting boot the best reviews are the Muck boots and I'm almost afraid to ask where they are made now. I believe the started out in Texas.? I bow hunt in Wisconsin from Sept-January and am looking for the most versatile boot. I plan to do a lot of hunting by boat so waterproof needs to mean I can step in a foot of water and stay dry. I want removable liners so they can dry, I want a second pair of liners to wear while the other is drying. The "other " reason for rubber is scent control. Seems the Muck boot is the closest I've found so far. |
