Hunting knives
Just seeing what everyones thoughts are as far as best overall hunting knife, i personally prefer anything buck, my first knife was a 110 folding hunter, and that thing is still sharp today. some people swear by gerber and browning, what are everyones thoughts?

I am a fan of a sharp one. I don't really know if names matter so much. I have an old timer, and I also have a Buck 119 I got last year for Christmas, haven't had the chance to use it, but for an affordable knife it has a lot of supporters. I bought my dad one a couple years ago for Christmas that has dressed a lot of whitetails, and I don't have any that hold an edge like it. It was a 120 dollar knife, but you get what you pay for, Cabela's Alaskan Guide® Series Alpha Fixed Knife is the name of it.

lmao a sharp one ...... funny thing is my brother in law cant keep a knife sharp let alone keep a knife. Loaned him my knife so many times i now carry 2 knives ... a sharp one for me and a really dull knife i loan him....:hit:

My fave is a Schrade Oldtimer that I've had for about 15 years. I had a real nice Browning for awhile, but had to sell it when I got stranded out of town once.
I use several, my favorites are a Buck Duke which is a folding 3 inch drop point...A Scherade made in USA Pro Hunter which is a
3 1/2 inch sheath knife and a Bear (made in AL) which is a dead ringer for a Scherade Sharp Finger... |
Cheap durable knives. good to ragweedforge.com and look a the Swedish Mora's. Great cheap knife
middle of the road i use a buck fixed blade knife. There are so many in this catagory. Schrade sharpfinger, or a boker. higher end, AG Russel makes some nice knives but i found a Knifes of Alaska S30v steel knife that i will try this year. I know this isn't what people consider higher end, but at $100 i think you can get a good knife. Just don't see the need to buy a $300 for dressing a deer. i see those as collectors. Most of my knives are 4" blades or less with a 3.25 or 3.5" blade being my favorite. They must have a backbone to them. I don't care for thin blades that bend or give. |
I have a fair collection of knives, and I usually take the Gerber gators with me. They are compact, and easy to work with. I have large handmades, and find that they are too large for most tasks. If bone is in the equation, then a saw is all that is needed to complete the task. Stay away from serrated blades, as they catch on the hide, and result in cut fingers.

I have had a CutCo since 1970........and still using it.......Before the CutCo I used a folding lock blade K-BAR for years........
I really can recomend the WM1 from fallkniven, I like the shorter knifes for better handling and feeling.

My favorites are Gerbers and Buck knifes. Bass Pro makes some pretty good knifes as well. So do Winchester.
I like the swing blade !! IMHO it works better than any of the gut hook blades. The snap broke on mine the second time out and one phone call to Outdoor Edge and they sent me a new one !!
I like my Buck 110, my Shrade "Jim Zumbo Elk" knife (a discontinued model), and another Shrade I have that is sort of short and fat and has a gut hook. I don't like gut hooks, but it happens that several of my knives have gut hooks on them. I have a Gerber Gator, but I happen to like the above knives better. I also have a very small Kersaw knive with an about 1" blade that has a clip. I keep this in my Levis as a utility knive for cutting rope etc.

KOA, Knives of Alaska, Nothing like it, costly though.
knives
I have used Buck, Case, Marbles, Gerber, Old Timer , my wife bought me a TOPS knife called the Cochese love it but all in all they all work great if sharp the same as all being equally worthless in the feild if dull
I usually carry a Benchmade 710 now when hunting. D2 tool steel holds a nice edge and is relatively easy to sharpen. I have a pile of buck knives but their 440 steel is a pain in the arse.
I have several knives from all price ranges and the best I have found are Knives of Alaska they are pricey but I feel they are well worth the extra money chad
Buck 110 for me too. I just bought my son one for a hunting knife as well.
My "go-to" knife is a Coleman-Western Skinner! I've used it for over 25 years and it is still going strong.
another vote for Benchmade
110 buck too!
Buck Titanium has been doing it for years, although PUMA's are cats asch...
Ive used tons of different knives, from Old Hickory to Knives of Alaska. It all depends on what you are using it for, caping, de-boning, quartering, etc. I personally like the Outdoor Edge processing kit when im working on a deer.
I have a fixed blade schrade that has done well on a couple of elk. Bought a gerber skinner and saw combo pack that works really well on deer. Got e Remington fixed blade for Christmas that I have yet to use.
All preference. I've got a bunch, but the one that gets used most is a 35+ yr old Buck 110.
The best knife I think is the Havalon Piranta. It works great for field dressing and skinning, it cuts through just about anything and its nice because it fits right in your pocket. They are not good for prying on bone however. I am an outfitter as well as a meat processor and I use these knives daily in both arenas. All of my guides use them as well and have been very happy with them.
My favorite skinning/dressing knives are the Buck Vanguard (rubber handle) and Buck Outdoorsman. I bought the Vanguard for $18 when Academy Sporting Goods was clearancing them several years ago and that was a great investment.
My favorite utility knive to carry on me when hunting is the Wenger Ranger Hunter Swiss Army Knife. My MIL found one of these in Germany on a trip back there (home for her) and brought it back. |
This is by far my favorite hunting knife I have. My dad bought it for me for Christmas probably 7 years ago.

This is mine. I made it from a farrier's rasp.

The 2010 Mora Bushcraft and Buck Woodsman's are my go to knives, but my favorite is the Ontario Ranger 9" Orange Mircata handle.

Not a knife man
Never got into high cost knives. Instead got into sharpening knives years ago. Prided myself on sharpening inexpensive knives. The sharpening stones saved on the wallet.

Those knives are great, a friend got one a few years ago, wow was that thing ready for gutting and skinning and I wouldn't doubt the edge would last a long time. |
Damascus Hunting Knife by Izumi Ichiago
I like it a lot, tough to dull even a little bit. I don't doubt I could do 10 deer and still not need to sharpen it. I've seen some reviews claiming the sheath wasn't all that good, I disagree. I'm a finish carpenter/cabinet maker, I know quality workmanship, this shealths leather has been finished well and the construction shows signs of a true craftsman, the stiching is perfect. |
