Home from South Carolina
Well, the weather was terrible. It rained non-stop for 3 days. However, my dad did manage to take his first longbeard. It was 21.5 lbs, 10 inch beard and 7.8 inch spurs. In a driving rain storm he had the birds gobbling and four strutting in front at 75 yards and a fifth slipped in that he was able to kill. I had a chance the first morning when I was glassing some birds in a field that we could not hunt. I cutt at them and was answered by what I thought was a jake yelp in front of me. As I continued to watch the birds with my glasses I suddenly realized that two longbeards had come out from the direction of the jake yelp and slowly were walking past me. By the time I got turned around to get my gun up I had spooked them. It was a situation where when things are going good you kill them and when they aren' t you don' t. :) If they had only gobbled instead of yelping. Anyway, dad also had another bird strutting at forty through some thick woods and decided not to shoot. We saw a lot of turkeys and got real wet. It was a great hunt though. Mostly, because it was awesome to see how excited my dad got.
