Well, the weather was terrible. It rained non-stop for 3 days. However, my dad did manage to take his first longbeard. It was 21.5 lbs, 10 inch beard and 7.8 inch spurs. In a driving rain storm he had the birds gobbling and four strutting in front at 75 yards and a fifth slipped in that he was able to kill. I had a chance the first morning when I was glassing some birds in a field that we could not hunt. I cutt at them and was answered by what I thought was a jake yelp in front of me. As I continued to watch the birds with my glasses I suddenly realized that two longbeards had come out from the direction of the jake yelp and slowly were walking past me. By the time I got turned around to get my gun up I had spooked them. It was a situation where when things are going good you kill them and when they aren' t you don' t.
If they had only gobbled instead of yelping. Anyway, dad also had another bird strutting at forty through some thick woods and decided not to shoot. We saw a lot of turkeys and got real wet. It was a great hunt though. Mostly, because it was awesome to see how excited my dad got.
