RE: GPS useage
Lee, this is a very informative post. I usually hang around down in the political forum, but a friend of mine called me yesterday and told me about what you had written.
I teach a course on using a GPS with map and compass. Everything you say rings true. I have found that it just " clicks" in folks minds when they see it first hand for the first time...But as often as not there is alot of confusion right up to the point untill they " see" it all work out on paper. Consider this an invitation to come up to Hot Springs to compare notes.[8D] |
RE: GPS useage

RE: GPS useage
MacPa, you mean the world is NOT flat? [&:] you gave some good advice in your reply, they should always check the map datum information on any program they are using and set their gps accordingly. i am sure there are people out there that have read these messages and are using the topo maps that have nad 27 map datum on them and still have their gps set for wgs 84. i keep posting information on updates to garmin programs on here, not so much for the update, but to keep this information available for others to read., hunting season is coming, i am sure a lot more of us will be purchasing gps' s this year and some will need help with them.

RE: GPS useage
If I may, I would like to interject here.
I have personally never had very good experiences with down loaded or any sort of home computer generated maps. The scale, scope and detail are just not there. I use USGS 1:24,000 scale maps. They are UTM grid, 1927 NAD(conus). They cost about four dollars a piece. They are fairly large, but easyly folded and available throughout the United States. It only requires a little research on the users part to locate them. With that said, as far as the grid format and datum is concerned, as long as you have the right protractor, it' s hard to say if one is better than the other. But most folks seem to be more comfortable with the UTM/UPS format. For one, there are less numbers to worry about AND most forest service maps are that way anyway. |
RE: GPS useage
Dave590, thanks for your input. i use a program called maptech. you can find it at www.maptech.com. you can buy cd' s for each state for 99 bucks. they are topo maps, 1:24,000. the thing i like about the program is i can print out the section of the map i want to use for any particular day, you can add the utm grids to it, make notes at the bottem of the map, etc. and they are actualy copies of your topo maps. check the site out to see what i am talking about. i have them from new york all the way to south carolina.

RE: GPS useage
Lee, That is very interesting and by far the most detailed I have seen from an on-line source.
I must admit, I am a little spoiled in regards to the procurement of my maps. There are several Forestry service offices in my immediate area, so it' s really just a matter of going down to the office and picking out the quadrangle that I want. I do however have a question though, when you print out a page of a specific area, does it already have tick marks with Datum? |
RE: GPS useage
when you print out your map, you have several choices you can make.
1. in the setup, you can select as large an area you want to print out. 2. in the preferences, you can select nad 27, utm, or any other map datums you want to use. 3. you can print out a north arrow on the map, but this takes up space and everyone should know that North is always at the top of the map. 4. you can import waypoints to the map, name them, and also print out a seperate reference page. 5. you can print as many copies as you want. 6. you can add comments to the bottem of the map. when i print out my maps using utm and nad 27, the utm squares are indicated on the maps with the numbers showing at the top, bottem and both sides of the map. any other questions, just give me a yell. if you purchase the cds, them come with an installer for your puter and also a code for installing each map cd. write this code down, you will need it. |
