Note: I'm not trying to be a jerk, and I'm not calling Polaris owners idiots. I just enjoy fun, clean, intelligent debate.;):)

most of you that bad mouth polaris never had one.
I started out riding Polaris (my grandpa's late 80's 2 stroke 250 that I drove around a field when I was a kid). We've owned one for quite some time now (1996 Sportsman 400). I've also spent a good amount of time riding Sportsman 500's (nearly as much time as I've spent on the Prairie 650 and more time than I've spent on the Grizzly), and I've driven a Magnum RMK 500, Magnum 325, and a couple of 2003 Sportsman 400's on trail rides. Not a just a quick spin around the parking lot. Even when they're running, they don't perform near as well as the "rice burners". Here's why:

-One brake handle operates all 4 brakes. If you ever need to stand on the right side of the machine in off camber sections, braking becomes very difficult, especially if leaning back over to the left side of the machine to grab the handle takes too much weight away from the other side of the machine and you end up on two wheels or your side. Sure, there's always the foot brake on that side, but it can be difficult to use is such situations.

-The engine brake only works on the rear wheels. This can make descending steep, slick hills a nighmare. This may have changed on the new models, but all of the other model years are plagued with this problem.

- They're significantly heavier than the competitors' machines. The extra weight makes them harder to get unstuck or flipped back over and they're not as nimble.

-They're tall. Tall= tippy. Not any fun on advanced mountain trails.

-The big bore machines have no recoil starter. If the battery loses its charge in the back country, you are straight up screwed.

Yes, the "rice burners" have some issues as well. Take the Honda Foreman 450 for instance- the suspension is stiff and the ride is nowhere near plush. Landing jumps is likely to buck you right off the machine (it has nearly happened to me several times). Ground clearance is lacking and the back racks suck (the machine I ride looks like someone took a ball-peen hammer to the skid plates). But in the end, it'll outlast a Polaris and it'll still go places most riders don't have the guts to take them.

My ride is a 2001 Honda Foreman 450S. The only problem I've had is that the rear brakes are useless now. I replaced the front ones with discs 3 or 4 years ago and they work great. We duck hunt and often leave our machines parked in waterabout 3/4 the wayup on the tires and those drum brakes end up leaking and rusting to the point they become useless. Otherwise this pop-scooter has given me no problems.

I have a 2001 Honda Rancher 4x4 350. Love it. Never had even one problem with it! Handles great, suspension great. Gets me in and out of some pretty nasty places...never stuck. Press the start button, no choke. Starts instantly every time. Can't say enough about it. And looking at the prices, downright affordable! I also use it at the house with a pull behind swisher 44" mower, dethatcher and all around fun rides with my little boy! Downside...mine's red so when I'm turkey hunting I park it a couple hundred yards away, hide it, or cover it up. Yep, that's my only downside. I highly recommend the Rancher.
