I would like to buy a GPS for the first time. i have no idea what to buy as there are so many to pick from. I'm looking for sugestions from people that have them. i will use it for hunting mostly. i think i would like one that i can map with too. can any one help? thanks , Tom

In the search box type in GPS - you'll get more information than you bargained for! I highly recommend theGarmin etrex series. They run from $100 - $400 and all work extremely well. FWIW - just about any gps will do the trick -- it all depends on what you want.

i would recommend the the garmin rino.
they are a gps and radio combined

I have the Etrex legend. It is a nice little unit. Plan on spending a extra $100 for the topo software. The built in basemap stinks.

I have the Garmin etrex Vista color, with the mapsource Topo software. This thing is amazing. If this thing doesn't do it, you don't need it. If you shop around, you can pick one up for $250 or so, then $100 for the mapsource software. The software is well worth the extra money, because the basemap that comes with it sucks.

I have a Garmin 60 CS and just bought the Navigator v7 software. It is great for use in the field and I can now use it to help me around the city. I can highly recommend this setup.

I've had three Garmin's (keep upgrading) & currently have the 76S, they are great units. I've put mine through hell hunting & offshore fishing (as a backup) & it's never let me down. once I lost mine in the woods for three days (two of which were raining) & whenI found it it fired right up. Buy a Gramin!

I bought an older Magellan GPS 300 from a friend of mine for about $10.00

They are going on Ebay for under $75.00

It doesn't have all the bells & whistles as the new one's, but it works and is good to start with and if you haven't spent much money for it, you won't be too mad if it gets broken or lost.

Same here... I too have an eTrex Legend. It's a really cool GPS packed with tons of features! But you are right, the basemap is really generic and only shows major highways. The $99 topo software shows a lot more, and the USA highways map shows even more (but without topo).
