I had the same problem you did and after doing some research I took a look at the Lowrance Ihunt C. It has a lot of useful features I would recommend it to anyone especially with the software. The only thing is, its a little complicated, but you get use to that after a couple of hours of playing with the thing.

I have the Garmin Etrex Legend. I really like this unit. The only issue that I have with it is that sometimes it takes a while to locate satellites. In my opinion it does work fairly well for road trips also. If you are on a major highway in an unfamiliar area, there is a function where you can choose up-coming exits and it will tell you what hotels, resturants and other things are located at that exit. I like this feature when trying to decide where to stop and eat on a road trip.

I have the iFinder Pro. I have had it for about 3 years now. It has a lot of features but it is good to use outside of hunting as well. I use it boating and for travel as well.

i also use magellan. it has never let me down and seems to work great, even under dense oak hammocks. also, the major feeding times guide built in has always been on the dot when i've seen game.

Go with the $99 Garmin. Can't be beat for a good everyday unit.
