RE: jack rusell for tracking
I had a Jack Russell that I used for tracking wounded deer. Alls I did was to go get him and let him follow me to a deer that I had killed maybe a couple of times. After that he knew what was expected and did a real good job.
The problem was that I'm just not a dog man and during the non-hunting season I just did'nt care for his hyper nature so I sold him off. I've found that most any kind of dog is quick to pick up on a blood trail if worked with. I may get some other more laid back dog of some kind as I am color blind and have difficulty seeing blood on the ground.

mn archer- check out http://www.unitedbloodtrackers.org/
if you have not yet. folks on that site have lots of solid knowlegde in tracking deer.
jack russels should work great , Africian PH'S use them and seems i've heard of them being used in TX
i'm looking at wire haired dachshound , and bavarian mountain bloodhounds and even at Karelian bear dogs none are easy to come by.
