I am looking for suggestions for a new dog. I have a 3 year old pointing lab and a 13 year old lab. I have always had 2 dogs for hunting. My 13 year old lab wont be able to hunt to much more..arthritis in hips. I will need to start thinking about a new dog in the next 12 to 24 months. I have always had labs...although this is my first pointing lab. My little pointing lab is doing great. For my next dog I am interested in a flusher or pointer. The breed needs to be good with kids and others. Not need to be exercised every day( No breeds that are hyper please)...as thats not possible with my work schedule. Intelligent and trainable. Loyal and a good family dog that isnt a big barker..I live in city. Dog will be outside in kennel when weather permints and inside otherwise. Things like a non hair shedder would be a plus. Just want a really good hunter. I have given up duck and deer hunting all i hunt now is pheasants and quail. Please feel free to make suggestions and recommend breeders/trainers.

Also, is it any better to purchase a trained 2 to 3 yr old dog for $2000.00 to $3000.00 from a good trainer as opposed to getting a puppy and spending that much over a couple of years to have it trained. I know that my current pointing lab is 3 ...I have about $3200.00 (including the cost of the pup) into this dog now. Can a dog that is 2 to 3 years old still bond with an owner that just bought them???

Consider a Llewellin! Our pups are bred from hunting and competition stock. They are very stylish in the field and make FABULOUS children's pets. Their compact size, low shedding and laid back disposition make them wonderful house dogs. Llewellins are like potato chips...ya can't have just one! WOW, I can't imagine spending that much on a dog! I have 3 shorthairs and 4 kids that love playing together. The most I've spent on a dog is $400. I'm no genius and have trained my dogs myself(I didn't really do much, but just keep them in birds, the rest comes pretty naturally to a well bred shorthair)I also have two labs as well and they all get along fine

I am with you I never pay that much for a dog.I did how ever get an offer for my dog of $2000 when hunting with a guy. What a nob.

Kinda of the same with my horses. We use ONLY mustangs that we get for $125. They are asom I shoot of them and will pack any thing from food to bears.

I gess people with less $ will spend less $.

I would second the Llewellin. The english setter is a really good kid dog combo. My 3 yr old is just a big baby at home and a working machine in the field.

If you go back to the $ part of the story, you get what you pay for, and hopefully with no probs. The work is done, go hunt the dog. I would have the owner take you to the field, get there early in the a.m., Because that way if there are any boogers, owner has not had time to work them out. They will show, while showing the dog. Most owners and handlers are up front. I know that it will always come out in the wash!! You think about the price, 3-400 for pup, ball park 6 mo, training @ 350 a month Owner not making much, but the dog is done, and you have a dog you can cut loose and you don't have to worry about handle or bird work. So the actual hunt is much more enjoyable. Amatuer doing by self, dogs could end up bird shy, gun shy won't retrieve, scared to run, Lot of probs can happen, sometimes don't but can. And I am not saying it will, or did, so don't be getting upset!! It becomes a hard call. Love ya guys and no fingers pointed or feathers ruffled. Thanks Jonesy

Jonsey, you're getting ripped. People here charge $600 min/month for training. We have 3 places here that will train pointers and more east of the mountains. So, not many places close by.

Man its hard enough to get people to pay 350, its like the dog bill is last on list. But ya know, it all comes out in the wash, I enjoy everyday that I get to spend, meeting the people, working the dogs. I love the dogs that some other trainer says its junk, IF the client will spend money, i will say 95-99% of time I can and have fixed, seems like the money goes when the dog is progressing.Its a great feeling. I have only washed out 1 dog, a setter mix that I could not get right, boy still grouse hunts it,most of thetimes dog does it some times it don't. I was honest with the owner, and with the dog, it was not worth the money. Man I could cover myself up with dogs for sale, but it does not pay the monthlies, I guess when the people give you a chance, and you do a great job for them, on their dog. It is all that matters. Just like helping these people out, man I will wake up thinking about it, wondering if I said it so they understood. Take it to heart, most trainers don't. Love my life, wife, and the dogs. I charge 500$ a month, $125 a week but I usually tell people that I need at least 30 days to make a solid improvement in the animals behavior. For a started dog I get around 3000$, for a custom trained dog, which means I raise a dog for someone from a pup and teach them to handle the dog while it is being raised for a year I charge 4000$. I am busy most of the year. Demographic's play a huge part in this, I live in an area that supports this demand. I keep people on a waiting list most of the year...I take bird season off.
Jonsey is right...you get what you pay for. I train push button dogs that will handle like a dream in the field, behave perfectly on a leash in town and have decent house manners...for you fella's that would never pay that much for a dog that's great, I would put my dogs up against yours any day of the week. No offense, just honesty.
