Hog Gun?
Hi all, newbie here and I was wondering about gun choice for hog hunting. I live in Central FL and was checking out the regs for Ocala National Forest. At one point they mention hogs as being legal year round, but with centerfire rifles prohibited. Hunting Hog with a rimfire seems a bit odd to me. What do ya'll think?

RE: Hog Gun?
Someone here will know the correct answer to your question. I've never hunted Florida but I had the same questions about another state I hunted. I found that hogs were legal to hunt year round with pretty much whatever was legal to hunt with, EXCEPT during deer season. During the firearm deer season hog-hunters had to use what deer hunters would use and they had to be legal to hunt deer before they could take a wild hog.

Hunting Hog with a rimfire seems a bit odd to me. What do ya'll think? Once you get the hang of it it is easy to bang flop a hog with a .22 LR. Limit your shots to 40 yards orless and onlyshoot at a hog that presents a side view. Shoot the hog in the ear, in the eye or ona line between the ear and the eye. As long as the hog is kicking keep shooting him/her in the head:A semi-automatic is good for that. Do not use hollow point bullets, you want penetration. The .22 magnum is a fine hog killer. I use the CCI full metal jacket bullets. That bullet will go all the way through a 100 pound hog shot low behind the shoulder. Never had a hog get away after being shotwith either a .22 LR or a .22 magnum. |

RE: Hog Gun?
Yes your right a 22 mag will kill a hog (on a good day) but why have to go chasing after one after you have shot it..min round .243

Yes your right a 22 mag will kill a hog (on a good day) but why have to go chasing after one after you have shot it..min round .243 Yep, iwould prefer to hunt hogs with with amore powerfulgun. Actually i have killed many dozens with a muzzleloader. Like the original poster i often hunt in an area where center fire rifles and muzzleloaders are banned. Never chased after any hog that i shot with a .22 magnum. Chased after one that i shot with a.22 LR and got it. Pick your shots carefully and they bang flop. |
RE: Hog Gun?
Well I would never take a .22lr or magnum hog hunting by choice. He said only rimfire. If it could be any, I would use my Rem700 7mmMag with a 150gr hollow point. If you can hit'em, they WILL go down. And STRAIGHT down which is crucial for the edges of swamps I hunt. A porker goes in there hes gone for good.

RE: Hog Gun?
Hey folks he said RIMFIRE is LEGAL. CENTERFIRE is NOT. The 22 magnum is a great round for hog killing. I use the CCI 40gr hollowpoint and shoot them inbetween the eye and ear. The tracking is a lot easier that way.
DO NOT believe the hype about giant killer hogs. You do not need a bazooka to kill them. Besides that why in the heck would you shoot a big one anyway. Take one around 60 to 80 pounds and make sure it is female and you will have some great eating. |

RE: Hog Gun?
Sorry if I wasn't clear on which gun is legal. According to the regs I read, the rimfire only is legal. I would be doing it mainly for the meat, so actually the smaller female hog is probably a good idea. I was also attracted to the year round hunting. I'm having shoulder surgery soon, so I'll miss most of deer season. [&o]I'll have to look into a .22 mag!

RE: Hog Gun?
You should also re-read the regs for Ocala. It is NOT year round hunting.
Page 16 of the book. Look at the picture with the guy and bow shot hog. Then read the caption below it. http://myfwc.com/hunting/pdf/08-09HuntingRegulationsHandbook.pdf |
RE: Hog Gun?
The only animal that the use of 22's are prohibited on is deer I believe. Got to the FWC site and read page 14 of the manual.

RE: Hog Gun?
Hmm, on the bottom of the page with the season dates it says Wild hogs, skunks, nutrias etc can be hunted year round. I did see where says WMA's may have different regs, so I guess I'd better check a bit better before I go shooting anything!
|
RE: Hog Gun?
Ah yes, I found the Ocala brochure online. Hogs can be taken during deer season and small game season, not year round.

RE: Hog Gun?
Seriously where does it say that in the flier? The reason I ask is because I do use the 22 mag in WMA's sometimes. Please show me where so that I may avoid trouble, and others also.

RE: Hog Gun?
All I see is under "GUNS" line 10. "firearms using rimfire and full metal jacket (non-expanding) are prohibited for taking deer. I ask this not to be a wise ass but to ensure that myself and others do not get busted because you have been chasing hogs for longer than I have been alive. Experiance goes a long way.

RE: Hog Gun?
Here is my favorite hog guns.
![]() ![]() Lol.. Actually the gun you can shoot the best is the best hog gun foryou. You can take them with smaller calibers, but Id suggest you go no lower than a 243 or 223 ect. |

rimfire and fmj rounds can not be used to take DEER. Doesn't say anything about not being able to take hogs with rimfire and fmj rounds.

RE: Hog Gun?
It does seem to vary from place to place. And it does seem to depend on the season. In Croom WMA, in small game season, it specifically states "Centerfire rifles prohibited".
SMALL GAME SEASON: December 1 through March 1. Permit, Stamp and License Requirements - Hunting license, management area permit, migratory bird permit (if hunting migratory birds), and state waterfowl permit and federal duck stamp (if hunting waterfowl). Legal to Take - Wild hog, gray squirrel, quail, rabbit, raccoon, opossum, armadillo, beaver, coyote, skunk, nutria and migratory birds in season. Bobcat and otter until March 1. Regulations Unique to the Small Game Season - In addition to these regulations, all General Area Regulations shall apply. 1. Hunting with bird dogs or dogs with a shoulder height of 15 inches or less is allowed. 2. Hunting dogs other than bird dogs is allowed only in that portion of the area south of Croom Road and bounded on the east by Croom Rital Road. 3. Dogs and firearms are prohibited in the Croom Motorcycle Area. 4. Hunting with centerfire rifles is prohibited. TRAPPING: Prohibited. FOX, RACCOON This is from the 08-09 Crooms pamphlet. I see your point about Deer Season though. |

New small game hunting area available Star-Banner Published: Monday, October 6, 2008 at 5:39 p.m. Last Modified: Monday, October 6, 2008 at 5:40 p.m. OCALA - There is a new hunting location in Marion County for small game hunters this season. Key Documents:Marshall Swamp brochure (PDF - 91kb) Called the Marshall Swamp Public Small Game Hunting Area, it is located east of Maricamp Road at the eastern end of Midway Road, about six miles south of Ocala. Wild hog, gray squirrel, quail, rabbit and certain migratory game birds in season may be legally hunted. The small game season is Nov 8 to March 1. The migratory bird season varies with the species, but the first phase of dove season is under way now through Oct. 27. Vehicles are permitted only in designated parking areas. ORIGINAL: Rebel Hog ORIGINAL: Sangster rimfire and fmj rounds can not be used to take DEER. Doesn't say anything about not being able to take hogs with rimfire and fmj rounds. During small game season nothing can be taken with centerfire and deer cannot be taken with rimfire during ANY season. So...hog can be taken during deer OR small game season with rimfire. |
