Are we not Glocstermen?AKA: pig hunt
#1
Oh yes all we went to do some pig damage in a hurricane. I gots ta hep ma wifey at da school in 12 min nuts sos I aint ganna us da spellin check on dis un. First of all I am an idiot for going up the day after the hurricane (tropical storm) is paassin through. But what the hell I ate to much lead paint as a child anyway. I still like it along with crayons especially the one called blueberry. It all started with Todd(T Bare) callin on Tuesday sayin something like (…Uhhh…we still on??) and I says hell yes lets do it. I had one other ready to go and we loaded up in the truck at midnight (me and Doc) and met Todd at 2 a.m. to go up. It looked pretty good on the way up with stars and minimal wind (except from Doc ….dude you have issues wit burritos). We soon got off on exit 399 and and it went downhill from there.
Within 10 minutes the rain cam. Within 5 minutes after that the rain was going sideways. Within 5 minutes after that we were wondering “what the hell were we thinking”. My whole reason for being there was the fact that my food plot was getting washed out and I needed to plant some more seeds to time the opening of archery season deer. I shanghaied these boys by telling them that I would let them hog hunt. I was right in going up because EVERY feeder had issues from the storm. Most were gummed up but several had the Batteries fried like eggs. We tried to hunt the morning and I let them got to the swamp feeder and the end of the road feeder. I sat in the truck watching waves of rain go over and finally decided to go to the oaks stand.
I get there and the feeder does not go off. I climb down and inspect and everything is fried with a nice HOT batterie in it from the rain coming ion sideways. I decided to go for the street stroll and try to sneak up on some piggies. Sure enough I went down my favorite road and there was momma hog woth 6 to 8 little porkies in the 15 to 20ish pound range. I… being my lazy self did not want to crawl thorugh 3 inches of water, mud, and slime so I tried to sneak up on them. For all those of you that have been told hogs are blind let me give you just one word of advice…bullcrap. They see just fine. They ran like hell when three of them tagged me from about 75 yards. I went to meet the other guys.
We met and they saw nothing but I got some good info. My feeders were screwed. The rain was actually letting up so we went into town and got some goodies including new batteries and a crap load(no pun) of supplies. We made it back to the lease and I told them I needed a nap but sent them down the road I had seen the hogs on. Thid road seems to hold hogs like none other for some reason. I mean it is about as effective as my feeders but I have yet to figure out why. They tralipsed through the daisies and I settled in for a nap.
3 minutes later I hear POP, POP, POP. Or at least it felt like three minute. I lift my head and look out the front window and there standing in fron of me about 50 yards away is a deer with a rack like none I have ever seen. It is straight out of a hunting show/Tecomate/magazine kind of rack. I did not know they got that big in Florida. Well he heard the gunfire also and and ambled off the scene. I went back to sleep. TAP TAP TAP……”we shot two hogs”. Oh jeez I gotta get up and go peel some pigs. Well I guess that is why we came. We get one dressed out and could not find the other one because in the rain blood trails just did not last more than a minute. We fix feeders and get everything squared away for the evening hunt.
I put Todd in the Swamp stand(knee deep water today). I took the Oaks and James the road stand. I am in my stand watching the quail have field day on corn and all of a sudden I hear the distinctive BOOM of a 30 going off. I cross my fingers and I hope Todd broke his pig cherry with some pork. He did. I met him up at the truck with the perfect pig. Congrats and Doc came in with nothing. All in all a very good but wet trip and hopefully I can post some pics soon.
P.S. For all those of you that complain about not being able to get hunting land. I met Todd(T Bare) and so far he has gone with me several time to the property. He is ready on TIME. Works his ass OFF. Doesn’t complain ever(yet). And doesn’t even balk when it comes to gas money. He even helped me spread Milorganite(people crap which really stinks) on my food plot at 9:30 at night without a single complaint. His quote “its got to get done”. Is there any wonder I will try to put him on that giant buck come opening day. Think about it and it might get ya some good shootin opportunitys.
