AR-15 5.56 Nato round for Hogs?
Looking at getting the Stag-15L Model 6L for a Hog gun for Texas panhandle. Question is (I know placement is key) will the 5.56 (.223) round be good enough for hog hunting? Wanting to set up a feeder below a hill for a distance shot and followup opportunity.

The .223 can get the job done if you use premium quality, dangerous game bullets. If I remember correctly, swift makes a solid copper bullet that will get the penetration you need. However, in my opinion, the .223 is marginal on large hogs. If I had a .223 in my hand when a hog charged, then I would use it to defend my self, but I doubt that I would go out looking to pick fight on purpose with one. I sure wouldn't buy one for that purpose. I know that a .223 will killa hog, and that there will be people come on here and say that they have done it, and I do not doubt them, but the .223 leaves very little margin for error, and if you spend very much time hunting hogs in the TX panhandle, sooner or later you are going to go beyond that margin.

You can get an AR in 6.8 or .308 or .300win mag or just about any other caliber for that matter. That way you get your AR and enough gun. I have one in .223 but am looking at the DPMS ar-10 in .308.

Probably 95% of the hogs I shoot fall to my .223. The more I use it, the less I am willing to call it marginal, especially with Sierra Gamekings. Every hog I've shot with it has dropped quickly, most in their tracks. I shoot it accurately, and can get off accurate shots with it quickly because I shoot it all the time, so that's what I use. Dead is dead, and .223 dead is just as dead as .308 dead.

Your prob right on the dead is dead. I keep getting drawn to the AR15 even though i know nothing about it but just started looking into it. I havnt even started getting the bug to reload, im too spoiled on going to the ammo rack and picking it up and walking to the register and bam, theres 20 bullets.

I've killed about 15 hogs with the military M193 ball round-all were bang flops. That bullet performs very well on hogs if you shoot them in the right place.
