44 Magnum?
I'm planning on going hunting here in South Florida, and so far the only i own at the moment that would be good for short range brush country is my Taurus 44 magnum. Only i'm unsure on what bullet type/weight to hunt with. I've seen Hornady's Leverolution ammo for the 44 in 225gr., I was thinking a Cast Lead bullet but with the Hornady loads i just found i thought those might be better.
Thanks for any info on this....this will be my first hog hunt so i'm hoping to actually find a hog and just maybe have the right ammo. Thanks! |
RE: 44 Magnum?
Ilike just about ant factory 240gr. flatnose for that kind of hunting.I have taken whitetail with at close range from my RSRH and they did well.

RE: 44 Magnum?
Thanks Dan, so when you say factory flat point does that mean JSP...At the moment i practice with 180gr. & 240gr. in a JSP, and they have flat tips. For what it's worth, i'm hoping to have maximum damage so not to trudge through the waters down here in florida to find the downed animal.

RE: 44 Magnum?
Any 240 gr will do from Cowboy loads, solid lead to jacketed soft point.

RE: 44 Magnum?
I use the buffalo bore ammo that is great stuff but hold on to your gun it has a good kick but the pig won't
|
RE: 44 Magnum?
Yes JSP,I used alot of hornaday before I started reloading.I still use there bullets,Those buffalo boreor garrett rounds are very hot,I think they say to use only in ruger revolvers.

RE: 44 Magnum?
Any one of these have dropped hogs. It's a matter of shot placement.

RE: 44 Magnum?
Dan,
Mineis a 9 1/2 " , The other is a 45 long colt with a 7 1/2 " and the S/S is a .22 Mag. 6 1/2". I even put the .22 long cylinder in and have killed hogs! I haven't tryed any APC's on the 45. I realy like Rugers, single and double action. they are all point and shoot guns. Come to Texas some day and we will go tomy lease, nosure thingon a shot. But we will eat good!!!!! |
RE: 44 Magnum?
I would love to do that! Never been wild hog hunting and that would be a great harley ride.Maybe we could trade a coyote/bobcat hunt for a hog hunt.

RE: 44 Magnum?
I don't have my feeders going yet this year, I'll let you know when the hog start comming. How long a drive to Dallas or Logans Port La? Were about 15 miles from there.
|
RE: 44 Magnum?
Dan I will be feeding my feeders after Turkey season. I will let you know the hogs start hitting them. If you want to meet me in Logans Port La. The lease is about 15 min from there. Bring a friend if you want.

RE: 44 Magnum?
Okay I am waiting

RE: 44 Magnum?
Haven't taken a hog with them, but I've been using a 240gr JHP fromAmerican Eagle ( from federal cartriage co.) I've never had a complete pass through, but the deer absorbs 100% of the shock and they drop instantly. The impact is very similar to hitting a deer with a 12ga.rifled slug. I shot this small buck last year from 35 yards with the 240 JHP.

RE: 44 Magnum?
Dan and/or whitefalcon. What kind of scope do you have on your 44? I am debating putting one on mine. What would you recommend? I have a super redhawk with I think 7 5/8 (can't remember exact length....I know the 7 is right) Thanks!
