Thanks for all the good info guys. I'm leaning toward a Beagle or Jack Russell. I need something small enough to go through all the thick cover on our ranch.

Glad you mentioned the jack russell. I saw a show on Outdoor channel where a PH in Africa used 2 as blood dogs. They trailed a Kudu after a marginal shot and kept it bayed until the hunter got there to finish it off.

The only guy that i know of in this area with a tracking dog has a Jack Russell. That dog has found several elk and a bunch of deer.

I've got a Drahtaar/Blue Heelermix that I trained to blood trail on a leash and she lives to do it. A friend just got a beagle pup and will be coming this week to start trying to train it to trail. He's bringing a book that hefound on the subject and I'll post the title when I see it.

The name of the book is Tracking Dogs For Finding Wounded Deer. It is 350 pages and has a full page of other recommended books pertaining to dog traing. Author is John Jeanneny and it was published by Teckel Time Inc.. They are showing an ordering address as

It is a good idea to haveyour blood trailing dog leashedwhen trailing inhog country.A friend had two setters killed by a big boar.
