RE: Weapons for hogs
Hunting hogs with dogs I always preferred my 30/30 because it's quick to shoulder and I shoot it well. I still prefer to have a climbable tree close to hand.
From a tree stand most any caliber I have with me will do as I will be going for a head shot anyway. I killed two yr before last with my 06 with one shot, got both in the head. |

RE: Weapons for hogs
ORIGINAL: Rebel Hog Bro Mac, don't likeother hunters running behind me with loaded long guns. We always usedholstered side arms untillthe dogs would have the hog at bay.:) I do have to admit though, the marlin 45/70 SS guide gun does look nice for this situation.. |
RE: Weapons for hogs
Bro Reb I would'nt waste my time or energy toting something I could'nt hit with practicing much less in a need to situation. Good thing about a lever action you don't have to chamber it until you need it.:D

Good thing about a lever action you don't have to chamber it until you need it.:D Now if y'all are stalking Hogs without dogs, that's a different situation!:DI stalked Hogs for 7yrs and thenI Dog Hog hunted and breededhog dogswith the same hunting partner for 40yrs.When I wasn't hunting hogs, I shot Quail, Doves and Ducks. In all hunting situations with others, you have to have abuddysystem and rules.:)That's a must! |
RE: Weapons for hogs
Any of the options the others and you already mention would do the job...after all you know better what your son will be able to handle...on a side note, remember...they are not weapons, they are tools!!:D

RE: Weapons for hogs
ORIGINAL: ajmcfm What is the most widely accepted weapon of choice for hog hunting? Is my 50 cal muzzleloader stuffed with a 348 grain hollow point and packed with 100 grains of pyrodex good enough? What about 12 gauge slug gun pushing a 1 1/4oz Winchester Gold Partition slug gonna do it? Need something my 9 year old can shoulder and still stay in the stand when it kicks. During ML season on WMA's andNo Dogs,I carry a .44 Mag Cap & Ball. Don't like the idea of just having One shot.:) ![]() If we are going to Stalk the Hogs without Dogs, I use the Moss 835 Combo w/ rifled barrel and Winchester BRI's sabots, but have othershotguns also! ![]() ![]() |
RE: Weapons for hogs
Rebel Hog - Is that a Ruger Old Army?? How is it? Whats it like to shoot? Am thinking of getting one for ML (missed a deer last year at 80 yds, dagnabit buck ran TOWARD me, and I dropped the first reload, and by the time I quit fumbling and got the gun reloaded, he was off into the swamp..)
