Thanks guys... Do these hogs have any effect on deer? Knowing they are using this trail should I expect to see deer?
Deer generally avoid hogs. If you get hogs coming around, the deer will only show when the hogs aren't there.

When the deer start fawning, hogs will eat a fawn if they can find it and catch it.

Was the grunting a normal social sound from the hogs or what?
Yes. They are trying to locate the hog you just shot or shot at. They are about ready to flee, but aren't sure yet.

Several times, I've been able to kill multiple hogs because of this grunting. I'll shoot a hog and the rest of the hogs scatter. I don't make any sudden movements to tip off my location. Usually the hogs are so suprised by the first shot, they have no idea where it came from. They will stop and grunt when they reach cover, trying to signal to each other to regroup and see who is missing. I follow the grunts 'till I see the hogs, and shoot another one.

You can tell around here which groups have been shot at and which ones haven't. The groups that have been shot at will scatter after the first shot. The groups that haven't will run a little ways, then sound the recall. If there are multiple pigs on the grill, you know I found some slow learners.:D

Looks like you're getting the hang of it. I have heard a TP&W biologist say that if you have a big group running an area the deer will push out a little (now she was referring to West Texas where there can be a shortage of food). I have personaly seen 4 does with a single boar feeding 20 yds apart on a wheat field in the same area. The single boar is no longer feeding with those does. He was smoked and served. And he was yummy!

Love to see the little piggies with racing stripes! Cool camo.
But they all grow up to be destructive and therefore must die!
Do approach carefully. They can be nasty if the still have a little life left in them. Oh and if they smell you but can't see you yet theycan growl too. First time I heard one growl and grunt, I ran up the tripod, I don't think my feet used the proper bars either. It was before daylight.
Have come up on hog traps with sows and piglets and those momma's have cruel intentions. The 2 little ones just copied her behavior it was really neat.
