Need some insight on hogs
Hello everyone,
I'm from New York and technically we have no wild pigs. We'll we do. I've got pics from last year and htere have been numerous sightings and some killed. my question is Sat while deer hunting I was hunting a trail that had mud caked on the trees like 3+ feet high. I know the pigs travel to a corn field and with my buck tag filled I decided to sit in this area for a pig. It worked right at dark I got out of my stand and turned around when I heard what I thought was 20 deer coming my way, but to my amazment was a pig. BIG pig.I nocked a arrow it stopped broadside and I heard more coming so I took my eye of of it to look at the otheres and when I linedback up on him/her it quartered away and I hit the shoulder plate. we'll after I shot the other pigs started grunting. Scared the S%^T out of me, almost climed back up my stand. What does that mean and what are good tips to hunt these pigs. Thanks for any info..... |
RE: Need some insight on hogs
Means you got hogs! Put out some bait soon before they move on. I don't know what kind of broad head your shooting, but most will work. If they kill a deer they should kill a hog. I use 125 grain Nap Thunderheads and Grim Reaper Mech's. either ones work for me.
Sound like you hit the shield, it doesn't matter what your poking him with, you hit the shield that's why you didn'tget any penetration. The shield is extremely hard. If people raise hogs, there are wild ones, they tear down fences and take offand become wild, soon they are mating and the feral pig population grows. Go get you some, you'll like them. Unless your Jewish :D:D. |

RE: Need some insight on hogs
If your interested in keeping them "located" and maybe killing a few more, here is a suggestion that has worked wonders for us in the Texas Hill Country.
Go get a bag of deer corn and a bag of maze (or any bird/foul type grain). Mix half and half of the above two in a plastic trash can (about 30 lbs. total at a time). Fill it half way with water and the other half with a couple of cases ofColt 45beer (good cheap stuff), and mix in about 10 lbs of brown sugar. Stir it up real well with a broom handle. Let that sit with a lid on it in the sun for about 3 weeks. Then hold your breath lol and put out 5-10 lbs. of that stuff every day. Preferably bury it about 6 inches under the soil if you can. After a a bit of time you will notice the hogs coming back to it every day. And it is cheaper than store bought baits such as "Hog Wild" or "Hog Draw". Both work well though. Best of luck. |

Thanks guys... Do these hogs have any effect on deer? Knowing they are using this trail should I expect to see deer? Was the grunting a normal social sound from the hogs or what? They are starting to cut the corn, should I get there tonight? Thanks for the info, I've been hunting for 17yrs (deer, bear, turkeys etc...)and with hogs it like starting all over again. All and any help is appreciated.

gergie, mix some whole corn with water in a half full 55gal drum and add 2 cans of Red Devil Lye and let sit with cover for a week stirring it every day. You will wind up with a 55gal drum of Hominy. Rinse it down withwater and feed it to um. You got to be fast, or they'll knock you in the dirt!!:D:D:D:D

New York Pig down for the count
Well.. I finally got one. Had to sit in the pitch dark for 2 hours and A big male came in. Smoked 'em... I missed 2 during the new york turkey season and made some good bait and they came running.. 100+ pics on camera in 2 days. I will post some shots of the kill as soon as I figure it out. I also just checked my camera and I have a sow with 6 piglets coming in as of 7-11. I might just open up my own preserve. New york estimates there are 300+ wild pigs runnning around and could triple in a year. Does this sound right? How do you make the pic smaller? It says file is to large. Thanks |
RE: Need some insight on hogs (update)
I think it worked. The pig died right in front of my trail cam. Tis is literally 3 secs after the shot. I will post more pics if this works.

RE: Need some insight on hogs
ORIGINAL: gergie Thanks guys... Do these hogs have any effect on deer? Knowing they are using this trail should I expect to see deer? When the deer start fawning, hogs will eat a fawn if they can find it and catch it. Was the grunting a normal social sound from the hogs or what? Several times, I've been able to kill multiple hogs because of this grunting. I'll shoot a hog and the rest of the hogs scatter. I don't make any sudden movements to tip off my location. Usually the hogs are so suprised by the first shot, they have no idea where it came from. They will stop and grunt when they reach cover, trying to signal to each other to regroup and see who is missing. I follow the grunts 'till I see the hogs, and shoot another one. You can tell around here which groups have been shot at and which ones haven't. The groups that have been shot at will scatter after the first shot. The groups that haven't will run a little ways, then sound the recall. If there are multiple pigs on the grill, you know I found some slow learners.:D |

Looks like you're getting the hang of it. I have heard a TP&W biologist say that if you have a big group running an area the deer will push out a little (now she was referring to West Texas where there can be a shortage of food). I have personaly seen 4 does with a single boar feeding 20 yds apart on a wheat field in the same area. The single boar is no longer feeding with those does. He was smoked and served. And he was yummy!
Love to see the little piggies with racing stripes! Cool camo. But they all grow up to be destructive and therefore must die! Do approach carefully. They can be nasty if the still have a little life left in them. Oh and if they smell you but can't see you yet theycan growl too. First time I heard one growl and grunt, I ran up the tripod, I don't think my feet used the proper bars either. It was before daylight. Have come up on hog traps with sows and piglets and those momma's have cruel intentions. The 2 little ones just copied her behavior it was really neat. |
RE: Need some insight on hogs
They multiple like cock roaches. The little ones are called shoats.
