It's a GAMO Adult Air Rifle, I haven't gotten to see the footage yet myself but he said it was pretty exciting!
|
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
i suppose the ?? would be why=) why risk injury and not a clean kill.

RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
More Details
611000454 Gamo Hunter 1250 1250ft per sec, pretty good, but on hogs?:) Like Kevin said, you might put it's eye out!:D |
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
I don't know if they set out for hogs while hunting or what the exact scenerio was, all I know is he squared off with one with an air rifle. I set my dvr to record it so i'll let you know more after I see the hunt.

RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
If this guy planned on this hunt, he's a loon toon. Who wakes up and thinks "hey lets go hunt pigs with a pellet gun, why thats something thats never been done before" Come on its not ethical not to mention i have a Beeman that shoot 1200fps and i have hit crows dead on and they can still fly away. All this guy is going to do is piss off a 180lb pig..........
|
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
I've got to know ...
How do you take down a full grown hog with a high powered BB gun ? What's the shot placement ? Mine does 1,000 FPS and I wouldn't try anything larger than a bunny with it , maybe a young coon on a headshot . There was a guy who went by Sifu Skyler on here awhile back who was touting those air cylinder powered high velocity models , but I still don't see how you could take down a pig with one , even in .22 caliber , they just couldn't generate enough energy to take out an animal that size . You need to get your bud on here to answer these questions in order for us to understand better . |
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
i have to agree, this seems kind crazy. the only possible way is a shot through the eye socket head on and hope or pray you hit the brain.
|
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
I wish i knew the full story, and he's in Africa until August 7th so he's unreachable. Hisshow is actually going to be aired on August 12th on OLN http://www.stevescott.tvis his site. Feel free to get on his discussion board and ask him anything you would like.

RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
I used to be into air rifles pretty heavy. While I'm not sure about hunting hogs w/ them, there is/was a Korean gun out there a few years back that was 9 mm, and shot a 60 gr. pellet. These guns were called "pre-charged pneumatics" and you would fill them w/ a scuba tank. I don't recall the mv or k.e. for this setup, but taking large game w/ an air rifle is nothing new. Lewis and Clark had a .36 cal [same principle] on their expedition, and did take deer w/ it. In those days, they used a ball type reservore [sp] to hold the air. There was a .50 cal repeater made in the 1600's called a "Girdoni" that would penetrate armor at 100 yds plus. They both used hand pumps like bicycle tire pumps that took something like two or three thousand strokes to fully charge!
Edit: The Korean guns were being made in .177, .20, .22, .25, and the 9mm last I knew, circa 1999. They were called "Dai-wu" or something like that. |

RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
Here is the deal. I saw this episode over the weekend and this "air gun" is no Red Ryder!
It shoots a 700-something grain slug that isa 12 bore. A single shot to the head dropped the pig like it was hit by lightning. I don't know what the velocity is, but it probably wasn't more than 300fps. Would I hunt pigs with it! Maybe. |
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
Reb: Two guns, two stories, lol If it was ANY .177, thats no good. Apparently, Boflex knows a little more about the whole deal, and my only point was there are air guns out there that are capable of clean kills like Bflex described. Us old Benjamin and Crossman guys need to leave them piggies be! Another thing, these air gun mfgrs use a very light, totally worthless pellet to get those advertised velocities. They have very little accuracy and even less down range performance. "Speed Wars" once again, sound familiar? Btw: I mis-spelled "Giradoni" earlier post.

RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
i saw on keith warren outdoors this weekend a guy with an air gun take a hog. he had a proto type gun and put air into a chamber under the barrel and if i'm not mistaken he shot a shot gun slug in it. he took a hog about 160lbs or so, it dropped in its tracks. he claimed the gun to shoot with 1000 ft lbs of energy.

It's easy to kill a pig with an air rifle! Just grab it by the barrel and swing like a madman!!! :D

RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
I am going over to the video editor after work to get the video teaser of hog hunt and air gun. I will post again once I get it up on his site for viewing. Hopefully then all of our questions will be answered.

RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
I am pretty sure it was aired on saturday morning. It was on Outdoor Channel at the end of the regular show. Sorry, I watch way too many hunting shows to keep track.

RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
the guy i'm talking about was on keith warrens show i think last sunday and keith referred to him as a guy from that shows forum.

RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
While I am skeptical of this entire notion...I am still curious. Now with that said, we kill a dozen or so hogs here per week. Most (with some type of .30 caliber rifle or larger.....some with bow) drop in their tracks with proper shot placement.
However, I have shot hogs with a .308 and had them run for a half mile before bleeding enough to slow them down. I have also seen LARGE feral hogs stop a .308 in their shoulder. That is damned near like an armor plate. Still curious, but I would consider engaging a hog with any type of "air rifle" to be unethical. UNLESS THE SHOW PROVES TO ME OTHERWISE LOL . good luck |
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
I have also seen LARGE feral hogs stop a .308 in their shoulder. That is damned near like an armor plate. On the video I uploaded to his site, it appears he shot the hog in the eye and it scrambled up his brain. The clip then shows Steve and the guide dragging the hog out from where he shot it, so it must not have run but died right there? Video of hog being shot in eye (You Call This an Airgun) http://www.stevescott.tv/node/95 Enjoy!! |
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
Interesting video you linked to above. Maybe...maybe not. No impact shot, no walkup/recovery? It goes from the shot....to dragging him out of the woods.
Now I have to wonder, how many people out there are going to get hurt after seeing this and figuring they can do the same. Shooting a hog in the eye with a "gamo air-rifle", on the ground, in their immediate vicinity is dangerous at best. Just my opinion though. good luck |
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
1000 FPS Air rifle with ballistic point pellets is more then efficient for killing larger game. I've taken plenty of coyotes and coy dogs with them in Indiana. Its all about shot placement. I take raccoons all the time with them. I'm a Wildlife Control Technician and I use an RWS Diana Model 36 to shoot raccoons in attics. Thats the same gun that I hunt coyotes and coy dogs with. I don't know how tough hogs are compared to domestic pigs but I know the pigs I've bought I could have easily killed with my pellet rifle.

RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
Ok....I am not sure about the .117 cal deal at all. Someone on this site tell methat the following hog can be brought down by an "air rifle"?? Someone is going to see this and get hurt.
good luck |
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
Damon, what was it killed with?
|
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
The video I posted was just a teaser for the show that will be aired on August 12th. In no way am I suggesting going out with a pellet gun and shoot a hogzilla in the eye, but it's kind of interesting to watch others do it.
|
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
The hog in my above post was killed with a 7mm super short mag. And he ran a long waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy zzzzzz before succumbing to the round.
good luck |
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
Given the range he was shooting at the hog in the video I'm 100% confident I could take a hog down with my pellet rifle. It would have to be a direct shot into the eye from with in 20 yards. Its all about shot placement. Any other shot from what I'm seeing would be just pissing him off. But definately can be done if done properly
|
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
I saw the episode. I think the guy was from Ohio. I didn't catch the make of the rifle he was shooting except that it was a proto-type (built by who ???) It shot a 50cal slug at 700+ fps. He wasn't shooting real far at the hogs, but he stoned one in its tracks at about 40-50yds with a head shot.
He filled the air chamber from a SCUBA tank, and from the size of it, I figure he only got one shot per filling. |
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
August 12th (Saturday)at 8:30 am EST on OLN TV the episode in question is going to be televised. You can watch the teaser episode here http://www.stevescott.tv/node/95"You call this an Airgun".
--diamondaranch, you should post that picture at http://www.stevescott.tv/node/68for a chance to win the monthly contest. |
RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
I have ear-holed pigs with a 22 rifle, and some air rifles aproach the same velocities as a 22, so I guess it's possible, but ya gotta be crazy to try that! We had a guy from Alaska this week that killed a 120 pounder at point blank range. He was sitting in the bottom of a dried up creek when about 10 or 12 hogs came down the creek toward him and did not see him, he fired on the leed hog at 3-feet and pushed him to the side with his gun barrel as the hog fell dead. Would have loved to had that on video. He said it was pretty scary, he had no where to go, so just hung tight and fired. The rest of the hogs split on both sides of him and kept running.

RE: Feral Hog Hunting with an Air Rifle
On the Men's Channel a show called Guns and Gears with Johnny Rowland. One episode in January I think they went to a fellers house in LA above Baton Rouge I think. He had an air rifle that shot a .45 cal, bullet. he filled the tank under it up from an air compressor. He said he could get 4-6 shots per filling.I believe he claimed that it shot over 1200 fps. At 100 yds. he had a sub 4" group. with 4 shots. They are supposed to be on the market sometime maybe this year or the beginning of next. All I know is that watermelon he had in a tree at 100 yds. did'nt have a chance
.My Crosman pumped up 15 times will make a stray dog holler at 30;) |
