22 is awful small for a hog. It will do the job if put in the right place, but id suggest using something bigger.

My dad works at the Univ. of Miss. Animal Sciences department and they don't even use the bolt guns that they use on cows on pigs. This is basically a big bolt that never comes fully out of a barrel, which is powered by a .22 blank. They use electricity, weird ear muff things. I think .22 is wayyyy to small for pigs, they have a very thick skull, and in the forehead lots of times a bullet won't even pass through.

A .270 will do it, but unless you get a great shot chances are it will run a little.

A .22 will just bounce off of them or not do to much damage.

You could go badass like this guy i know and kill them with a knife and a pistol at close range

i have seen a few hogs taken with a 22 but when he shot them i had an -06 behind him. 1 hog droped he shot it right in the middle of the eyes. The other one he did not get, and i had to hit it with the -06 as it was comeing after us. I am working on building me a hog gun. I am going to use a mauser 98 action and make a 308 out of it. I have seen 223 used and it did a good job but if you miss it is comeing after yea. i would say nothing smaller then a 223 maybe i 22/250 but that is it.

I think .22 is perfect! As long as shots are 10ft or less.

i once shot a fatbelly pigwith a contact shot on the forehead witha .22 stinger, the handfed Viƫtnamese pig was too big and aggresive to keep around children. They asked me to use my .22 just because it was "quit".
I shot it and the pig stood there for about 2 seconds, i saw little blood dribble from it's forehead. Then the Hog started to growl and chase me INSIDE his enclosed pen. While i was running i shouted for the hammer, because i realised that i could not run and load my gun at the same time. I also could not open the dor because the pen was located inside a childrensfarm. Because the hog kept on chasing mei yelled for the hammer. When i was running passed the owner he handed me the hammer. I stopped, turned and smacked it a few times on his head. This brought the hog down.Beating the hog to death was not a pleasant thing to do, and i was p*ssed that they asked me to shoot the hog with a .22.

So although it can kill a hog don't bet on it [&:]

I've used a .22 only while they are trapped. It worked, but still wasn't quick enough even when put an inch from their brain.(which is not between their eyes) They drop but it ain't pretty. Now, if they're trapped, I use a 410 slug to the head.

I have found that 00 buck frommy 12ga, works great. That's what I use if I'm not carrying my bow.
