In my early hunting years, I used a Ruger M77 all-weather in 243 for everything. I only had the one load for it,Sierra 85gn HPBT with 44gns AR2209 (=H4350). It reliably killed large boars with good bullet placement.

all I shoot is a Rem. 243 and have taken many , many hogs,in excess of 200 and never had a problem with the 243.

get him a youth model and he can use it for the rest of his life.
