Default New Hawg Hunter

In Galveston and have to admit I'm mainly a handgun type guy. But I hunted deer & upland game when I was up north and some of the guys at my local range told some interesting stories, so I've been thinking of tryiing it.

First off - the equipment. I was thinking of something in the .243 / .270 cal range - or is a bigger slower bullet in .30 or .40 cal more appropriate? I'd be likley hunting in my area mainly -SE Texas,Houston/Galveston over to the Sabine area. Kinda forestry there so I'm not sureabout the calibre.

But - where to go? Are there lodges/clubs in my area that could get me started?

Shoot, if you are a handgunner and hunt with dogs that's good, but if you don't
hunt with dogs, .243 with 85-100grs with a good game bullet is fine. You don't
need a canon to shoot hogs. In front of the shield, behind the shield, in the neck
or best place in the head. Remember, the bigger the hog and the farther you shoot
it from the truck, the bigger the job!

Hey you ever hunt hogs on post office street in Galveston?

My favorite is my 12 guage Ithaca Model 37 with Brennekke Rottweil slugs. Great for the tight work!

What most of the guys here have mentioned is fine, but when hunting with
dogs, I don't like the idea of someone running behind me with a loaded rifle
or shotgun. If they trip, which often happens, the gun is most likely togo off
and injure or kill you or someone in the hunting party. I always hunted with
my partner and the most we ever hunted with is only three at the most.

Let me add, if we were not hunting with dogs and hunting opened fields for hogs
and there were three of us, the one on the Left would shoot Foward and to the Left,
the one in the Middle would shoot Foward Only and the one on the Right
would shoot Foward and to the Right. You see why it's better to just be two of
you? Guys always have a planand know your hunting partners or know the hunting
abilities of your friends who might join you! I'm not a hunting teacher, just an olde
hog hunting fogy from the southern swamps, with a Love for hunting them there
Hawgs!
