Hog Hunting Weapons
There are as many good rifles, shotguns, and bows to hunt hogs as there are to hunt deer. I just wanted to know what everyones' favorite hog medicine is. Mine, as with most other North American game is in my signature and my avatar.

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
Rem. .35cal Woods Master.
For years I used a .45 1911 as my main weapon! Ihave always hunted hogs with dogs, never without dogs. |
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
Browing Avalance 11, 72 pound drawweight, 30 inch draw length fires a 125 grain Grim Reaper broadhead, with carbon express 300 arrows at 275 foot a second... or sometimes for old times sake I take the old Jennings Buckmaster same set up, just a little slower, but hits the mark.
You got to get up close and personal.... Dead hog walking! |
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
I have used my Mathews Outback for a while have had no problem putting many pigs down for the big dirt nap... I use some ole trusty Montec broadheads and blackhawk arrows to do the deed with.....the one in my avatar went right at 300lbs, he is -was the biggest wild hog I have ever seen, he now graces my wall in my trophy room...

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
my hog gun is a Win. 94 Trapper in 44mag with a 2-7 simmons with see through rings. it's great for close up hogs and others out to 100 or so yards. it holds 11 and has plenty of power for em.
i'm planning on trying to hunt them with my bow but haven't gotten around to it yet. |

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
flcracker, wish I had met you 15-20yrs ago! Good buddy, I'm a hasbeen to hog
hunting. I gave my dogs to my hunting partner 5yrs ago. We hunted together and ran dogs all over FL. for around 50yrs. I'm 65 and he is 73 now, but he still has the dogs, last time I seen him he had 26 hog dogs. We use to breed, train and sell the pups. Our cross was Calahoula, Pit Bull and Rhodisian Ridge Back. I always had 2 Trail, 2 Bay and 2 Catch dogs. Have killed and trapped many hogs! The biggest one I killed was in Lake Wales,FL. 375lbsin 1963 and the biggest he killed was in Fort Lonesome, 465lbs in 1989. He has the head mounted, hes jet black! |
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
I've only taken one hog, and I used a Remington 1100 12 ga. with rifled catilever barrel and 1oz Barnes expander sabot slugs. Shot a 250 pound hog at ten yards, and he was down for the count. Slug stopped in the fat on the far side. Worked great.

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
Hey Long, it will do it every time!;)
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
It sure did. I used that because that was what I had to use. All my rifles are for varmint hunting. I was very impress with how it performed, and shocked that I did not get complete penetration. Those are definitely some tough critters. I will post a pic later of the slug. It is quite impressive, mushroomed perfectly.

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
Going out Thursday afternoon with a 20 bore flint fowler. Anxious to see what a .60 caliber ball will do.
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
my weapon of choice for hogs is my browning 22-250 works great ive killed many hogs up to 250lbs great gun
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
30-30 Marlin
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
A 22-250? That doesn't seem like much of a hog gun to me. What type of bullets are you using? I would be afraid that little 22 caliber bullet would just blow up on impact. I just picked up some Winchester platinum tip slugs, and some partition gold slugs today. I might be testing them on hogs soon. I'm trying to get a good idea of how they perform before I let them fly after black bear.

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
Tom, I know what you mean. My minimum choice for big hogsis .357 P+mag with
the best bullets Fed. makes. Now, forsmall Piney rooters, 22-250 will do. Heck, a .22 long will killany hog if shot in the forehead, butmost of the time you don't have that chance, onlywhen the dogs havehim held down and then you run the risk of hitting one of the dogs. The problem is that most hog hunters have notencountered a charge from a Boss Hog. |
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
I like to shoot them with my bow. Ill aslo use my 300 wby, 30-06, 44 mag, or 45 acp. In my youth we would knife them. I now enjoy just shooting them.
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
I haven't ever been charged, but I still think that any 22 is too small. My minimum would be a .243 in a rifle, or 20 ga slugs with the shotgun. I'm guessing that a semi auto 20 ga shotgun with high quality sabot slugs and a low power scope...maybe even a red dot scope, would be ideal. Either way, my 357 stays on my hip during all hog hunts.
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
Was planning on a worked over Delta Elite (10mm) but it was sold before I had the cash. Will either be my .45 or my Springfield M1A until I can get a M1A with a shorter barrel, right now Im using a "loaded" model with 22 in barrel.

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
Either my SKS or my bow with a HAWGLITE and a lumenok. That nightime hog hunting is addictive!
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
Ive shot them with my m4, assorted deer and varmintrifles, a bow, and my trusty pig sticker.
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
Here are the pics of the 1oz Barnes Xpander slug that was recovered from my hog.
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
well maybe a 22-250 might be a little small but also shooting 60 boat tails have never failed as long as you can hit the dang thing right you should be fine
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
The picture of that slug should be in the Barnes catalog! That peformance was awesome, and the only way it could've been any better is if the slug had 1 more fps in it to barely squeeze out of the off side of the pig to leave you a better blood trail! My guess is with a mushroom like that the blood trail probably wasn't too much of a factor.

RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
The hog dropped right on the spot. I think it would have had complete penetration, but I hit the spine. It is 100% because of me. He came out on my left side and was looking at me. I didn't have a shot, and as I was trying to figure out what to do, he started to walk briskly right in front of me. I justshot a bit high, and clipped the spine.
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
We should all be so lucky with shots that go "a little high". I have never complained about accidentally hitting the spine. Even if they need a finisher you know that they aren't going anywhere!
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
10-4 Tom. Dead is dead!!! No matter were you hit it,i f it is not breathing,
it's dead!;) |
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
I certainly am not complaining. It worked rather well. It just was not what Iintended to do. It didn't expire immediately, but it couldn't go anywhere either. But I am sure that is why I didn't get complete penetration. But, it didn't matter anyways.
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
We use everything from a 25/06, .308, .300 WM, to my .450 Marlin. I like the .450 though because when you hit one with it they don't go anywhere.
|
RE: Hog Hunting Weapons
I use my 223,with a custom reloaded 70gr bullet.Killed 40hogs and 5 deer in the last 3 yrs with it.They(either one) don,t go anywhere!! Dead in there tracks and no blood shot either. vangunsmith
