RE: 25-06 or 257 Roberts?
The 257 is a nice low recoil round that will do all you ask of it at respectable ranges as long as you can put the bullet in the right spot. The 25-06 gives you longer legs but with it comes some extra push on your shoulder. I bought the 257 to have something different and ended up really liking it. Although if you looking at taking the longer shots I would go 25-06 or 270.

RE: 25-06 or 257 Roberts?
The 257 Roberts is a very good caliber and as far as deer hunting goes, it will kill a deer as fast as anything out there. With the Barnes 100 grain X bullet it will reach out for deer as far as most folks have any business shooting at one. Enjoy the low recoil calibers or end up with a shoulder like mine that is good for nothing and I can't raise it even up to my waist. I was an idiot recoil junkie too. Well its not an option any more.

RE: 25-06 or 257 Roberts?
The docs think shooting had a lot to do with the shoulder problem as it is not the shoulder I used for anything but shooting. I had a long siege with the 416 Rem Mag. A person does not even think about the recoil he soaks up while everything is still working well. Over the years though I shot a lot of big magnum rifles. Often up into the 100 plus rounds a day. There is no doubt now that where and when the pain is the most insense , that it is from the constant pounding I took for five or six years. Will everyone have the shoulder problems from recoil in later life? I have no way of knowing but a bit of common sense and body protection can do nothing but help younger guys. Believe me, You don't want the shoulder problems I have. I never could have imagined the pain and crippling effects that I live with now. A 243 even hurts it now. Ten shots from a 243 will cause a solid week of spells from severe stiffness to severe pain. The only blessing is that so far I can sleep without it bothering much.
Take care of your whole body but for sure the back and shoulders and eyes. Lost one of them too. I think any unatatural pounding and pushing will add up in later years. Many years of shooting the 45-70 and 30-06 was no help either. |
