SIG Handguns

Just wanted to know what everyone thought of the SIG handguns?

How you would rate them quality, and reliability wise?

Thanks

RE: SIG Handguns

One of the best,IMO. My buddy has a Sig p226. All ammo feeds through it and in over 10 years he has never had a jam or misfeed. The price is up there but the quality is the best. I know the ATF,Texas rangers and Navy Seals use them. The cost gaurd just signed a contract with Sig for the new one P229 with the Double action trigger. I can't remember the name of the trigger pull. Hope this helps you.

They are one of the finer semi auto's.They do cost allot but worth the extra cost.If you can see you way to spend that much money for a handgun by all means get a SIG.

RE: SIG Handguns

Too expensive in my opinion. I like the way they feel, I just can't see all the extra cost like I could a Kimber Target II. I look at a kimber and I see the bells and whistles. I just don't see it on sig. I am a big berretta fan and like it just as well. Also love Glock.

RE: SIG Handguns

Well the reason I am asking is becouse, I bought a Sig P229 in the 40 Cal.
and was just wanting to see about where everyone thinks they should be rated.

It is a fine pistol. Granted it is not in the same class as a Kimber, but too me it is one of the better tact. pistols out there.

This is my first Sig pistol and so far so good.

Thanks again.

I carry a Sig P229 in 40 cal as my off duty weapon. My on duty weapon is a Beretta 96 and it is a fine weapon too. However, after shooting a few thousand rounds from both the Beretta and the Sig, I definately prefer the Sig. The Sig is an excellent firearm and it will give you many years of service.

SIGs are very nice handguns. Like many things, you usually get what you pay for - and with the SIG you're getting a quality handgun.

Hunter,
You have made an excellent selection, both as to gun and cartridge. I own a Sig P239 myself (9mm). Over the years I've had the good fortune to own, and/or fire many handguns. Much of that experience was during my years as an LEO, and served also as
a firearms instructor for a few years. For pistols I've had Colt 1911's (Gold Cup & Series 70), S&W models 39, 59, 469, 5904, 6906, Walther PPK/S. I've had occasion to shoot Baretta's (92 & Cougar), HK, Browning HP, and too many others to recall.
For me, the Sigs are the finest handguns I have had the pleasure of using. Not saying
there aren't other good weapons out there, but for the money, I find it hard to beat a
Sig - very accurate, reliable.
Good luck with yours. I'm sure in time you will find it to have been a very wise choice.
BTW, if you'd like more infor. on Sig you might want to check out Sig forum. Following is

Virginia, for a guy with your experience, I would be interesting to know how its "better" than say a handgun 300-400 dollars cheaper. Maybe you can point out some differences.

RE: SIG Handguns

I have a Sig P220, .45 cal. I love the gun I have also shot and handled my cousin's Sig P229 .40 cal. He liked his so well he bought another; of course he won't give one to me. [:@] I really like the P229 and want to purchase on of them as well.

I have a set of Hogue finger grove grips on my P220 and my cousin always liked the grips and wanted some for his P229 but he could only find the Hogue grips with the no finger groves. Recently I found the grips with finger groves from bownells. I told him about it and he order them the next day. I have compared the P229 with stock grips and the one he put the Hogue ones on and the later is well worth the price and greatly improves the gun to the status of being the most comfortable and balanced gun I have ever handled even surpassing my P220.

BC
Better than a handgun $300-400 cheaper? Let's see, I bought my P239 for approx.
$545 (incl. sales tax, etc.), so you want me to compare it to a gun costing approx.
$150-250 ?
Why is it I get the feeling you like to start an argument? So, I'll rephrase a little, and just say IMHO the Sigs are better weapons - for me. Ok? And, as noted, I think hunter338 made a dang good choice.
Anycase, I did not disparage any other pistols. Most all that I've had experience with
were good weapons, and functioned fine (except the Gold Cup), but I LIKE THE SIG BEST OF ALL I'VE HAD/USED!
FYI - I don't like Glocks. Nope, never had one, and don't want one. Not saying they ain't good handguns, just don't like 'em.
Well, experience also tells me these comments probably won't be to your liking either,
so nuff said.
Oh, BTW, I like Dodge pickups, and think they're hard to beat also. :D I'm guessing you won't like that either.

RE: SIG Handguns

Why is it I get the feeling you like to start an argument
Actually not at all. I value on hands opinions. Like my Browning gold post in the firearms review. If I just borrowed one here and there, or just handled at the gunshop, I couldn't form my opinion I did. And couldn't have pointed out little things I didn't like.

I reload for a fella that has the sig 40. It shoots nice, but a little heavy for me. I feel my glock or berretta does just as good with the limited experience I have with it. But for someone like yourself, you might be able to point out little things that make it worth it for you.

I have been trying to think of a reason I want to buy one of these other than I hear people talk very highly of them. But i always go with other brands. No I don't want you to compare the Ruger. More like glock or berretta. I do like the looks and feel of the 1911 clone they have. Nice rail for accessories.

So, who said anything about Ruger handguns? I did not mention any experience or preferences for or against Ruger pistols. My only experience with those is with the older 22LR semi-autos. Personally, I've only shot two at the range, but I just don't care for them. Don't like the looks/feel of 'em any more than I do the Glocks. You like your Baretta and your Glock, good, stick with 'em.
As for your obvious insinuation that I've only handled most of the guns I noted at gunshops or borrowed 'em now and then - wrong! The department I worked on allowed
officers to carry pretty much whatever they wanted, so long as they could qualify with it.
We had a rather wide assortment of handguns and cartridges, though this was before the advent of the 40S&W cartridge.
I carried, used, practiced, and/or qualified with each of the guns noted, and that don't include any of the many revolvers I also had (Colt Troopers, Pythons, and Detective Special; Ruger Sec.Six, Service Six, and Speed Six; various S&W models including K & N frames such as model 19, 25, and 57, etc.). No, no Dan Wessons, though I did borrow/shoot one at the range one day (a 44mag.). Oh, yes, all the revolvers I just noted were also carried, used, practiced & qualified with.
Just one other note. In addition to my own, I also had occasion (many) to practice with, and dissasemble/clean, and work on many of these guns for the other officers on the dept.

Virginia7, do you have a complex. I know most cops I have met do, but this is nuts, I was giving you a freaking compliment and respect. Seriously!!! I was hoping you could pass off you knowledge since you said you handled most of them and shoot 1000's of rounds. But instead of handing off knowledge, you keep defending yourself from nothing.

Listen up, NOBODY is busting on you. You said you have handled all these guns, and made a statement to the effect that they are the best. Me and I am sure alot on here was looking for direction on why they are the "best".

RE: SIG Handguns

I too have fired used and reloaded for dozens of handguns of all Brands. I could not say that there is a best handgun brand or caliber. Most all of them have strong and weak points either mechanically or just value wise. The Sigs have been one of the least owned by me but I had a Sig 220. and it was an excellent pistol. They are a little heavy but very accurate and very dependable. The Ruger although not as pretty and maybe not quite as accurate as some but plenty accurate for its designed use and absolutely the most rugged and dependable pistols That I have owned and I have had six or more of them. I have owned all of the Glocks except the baby ones. I found them quite accurate and dependable but can't handle the no safty or visable hammer. The Bretta and Taurus have also lived up to my expectations and I would buy one of them again. I have had almost all of the 1911's and all things considered I would choose the Springfield Armory because of its rugged build and good cost value. I like the Kimber but they are over priced for me as I can do most of the tricks needed to make the 1911 shine. I got very good service from the S&W autos that I have had which is most of the 9MM and 45's I think the Ruger revolvers are the top of the line as are the Dan Wessons. I like the Colts but again they are over priced IMO.

If you take everything into consideration. Cost, Dependability and accuracy they all have something to offer. For pure defense I would pick the Rugers. They just don't fail.

I have a sig P220. I love the gun. It's a high quality weapon. I do, however have one complaint. The extractors are so strong they tear up brass, if you can find them after it throws them 25ft or so. I guess that's a problem i can live with. It's better than jamming on you in a pinch. Nice guns.

As I noted, my only experience with the Ruger pistols was limited to their 22rimfires, but
I always liked the Single-Six better for plinking, etc. No experience with the Ruger centerfire pistols, though everything I've read about 'em backs up what you noted.
Unfortunately, like the Glocks, I just can't get used to the look of the Rugers [:'(] , and the grips on two models I checked out at the shop just didn't feel right. The few I've encountered at the range seemed to function flawlessly. Love those revolvers though, incl. Blackhawks, Sec.Six & variations, GP100, SP101, etc. As usual with Rugers, darn good value for the money.

I checked out the Sig 229 before deciding on the P239. I liked the 229, but the 239 conceals just a little better I think - ok, not much difference, but every little bit helps when using for CCW. I like the weight, balance/feel, and fit of the 239 better than most
any other I've had. The only exception might be the one Browning HP I used - it felt like an extension of my hand. Another I liked was the S&W 469, but I couldn't carry it
on duty as we had a minimum barrel length requirement of 4". If I were still "on the job" today I guess I'd have to go with a 229 as well. My 239 has proven to be very
accurate, and reliable. It usually takes me a couple hundred rounds to get the feel of
a new gun, but I was bouncing pop cans around @ 25yds. right out of the box with this
one.:D

BTW, my Dodge = '92 Dakota 4x4 with 5.2L v-8 (318), auto. trans., and 3.90 gears.
It's been a good vehicle. I just spent approx. $12 last week for a resistor for the AC/heater, blower/fan. That brings total repair costs to approx. $40-45 since I've had it - not counting maintenance, of course (oil changes, tires, etc.). :D

RE: SIG Handguns

bigcountry,

I can give you some reasons why I prefer the Sig over the Beretta.

1. Even though I have shot more rounds through the Beretta, my qualification scores are better with the Sig and my groups are tighter.

2. The slide rails on the frame of the Sig run the entire length of the frame. On my Beretta they do not.

3. The Sig has a better trigger.

4. The Beretta has a manual safety....the Sig has an automatic firing pin block...in other words if you don't want to fire the weapon, do not pull the trigger.

I'm not an expert but all I can say is I shoot the Sig less but I am more accurate with it and it just feels better in my hands. Is it worth 100 to 150 bucks more than a Berretta? For me, yes it is.....for others it may not be.

Sig makes great weapons and as it has been stated before, you do get what you pay for. I have had a P228 9mm for 10 years and fired MANY rounds through it with no jams or misfires. I added a finger groove Hogue grip, a mercury filled guide rod, and Trijicon night sights to my P228 and enjoy it GREATLY. Happy shooting!!!

I am/was in the definate minority in not seeing the hoopla on the sigs. Reason I asked the differences people see, is I was wondering was I missing something.

Virgina 7 I don't know if it was just a quirk or not but one of the best shooting little 9mm's I ever had was the 3904 (I Think) It was a single colume magazine and very thin and easy to carry. I have the 15 round version of the same gun now. I think it a 915. It does not seem as accurate as the 3904. It should be though. I think the 229 Sig is the cadilac of nine MM's

My very first semi-auto, a 9mm, was the S&W model 39. I got it about 1974(+/-). It was a single stack mag., 8rds. if I recall ok. It worked ok most of the time, but would
fail to feed occasionaly. Couple of time pushed the bullet almost all way back into the case. Yes, was all factory ammo; hollow points. Hardball fed ok, though. It was a pretty good pistol, but the S&W I really liked was the original little "mini-nine", the S&W
469. It was a real good shooter. Got it when I was an LEO. Wish I still had it.
Still, with all the guns I've owned, and/or had opportunity to use, I like the Sigs best.
My little 239 is very accurate, and has proven to be utterly reliable to date with whatever I feed it.
I got to admit though, the Sig 229 is one fine 9mm. I checked one out, but went with the
239 'cause it's just that little bit lighter/smaller, and one of the reasons for the purchase
was for CCW.

Jake696 likes the Glocks, and that's okay. I guess they're okay, but I just can't get over how ugly the darn things are. And, I like an exposed hammer also.
I couldn't pass up a chance to "needle" a glock lover about those KBoom stories :D
Hey, he started it, asking if my Dodge was made in Mexico

I love shooting the Glocks and I have had all of the Glocks except the baby glocks. I can't handle the No Manual safty or no visable hammer for carry. I carried one for a year or two (Glock 22) but was never comfrotable with it. Although not easy to carry, I feel the most secure with my 4 inch 357 Mag. However the Ruger 45 is a close second. I love the 1911 but only the full size which are quite heavy. I kept the extra mags for my Sig 220 and may get another sometime. I quess there is nothing I would rather kill time with than a well tuned 1911 in 45 or 38 super.

Yeah, I know what you mean ref. the 4" 357Mag. I had traded my S&W 39 for a 6" Colt Trooper, and that's what I started my LEO job with. A few months later I got my first
45, a Colt Mark IV Ser.70 (see below). After a little work by a local gunsmith it was a good shooter. I had the feed ramp throated/polished, ejection port enlarged, magazine well beveled, and he changed the recoil spring. Carried cocked/locked.:D

After an incident in which the 45ACP sort of did not live up to its' fiersome reputation I riverted to revolvers for a while, incl. another Colt Trooper 4", then a couple of Pythons.
Always seemed to run into timing problems with the Colts though. Most of the guys carried S&W of one sort or another (mod. 19, 27, 28, 66). I figured to be different, and tried a Ruger Sec.Six - I never looked back. Played with a few more semis, but of all things, finally settled on a Ruger Police Service-Six, 4" stainless 357mag. (fixed sights).
You know - "KISS"! I painted the front ramp white, slicked up the trigger just a bit, and put on a set of Pachmayr grips. It shot real good. ;)
Today I have a Ruger Sec.Six., 4" 357Mag., stainless. Good carry gun for when I'm in the woods. My other fun/woods gun is a S&W mod.25 stainless Mountain Gun in 45Colt - very nice Then if I want to carry a little smaller/lighter I grab the
little SP101 (3", 357mag.).

RE: SIG Handguns

I had a S&W 44 Mag classic with the 5 inch barrel that I loved to carry in the field. I have long ago lost track of the S&W K Frames that I have owned. The one I carry now is a Taurus that has had the action tuned and the trigger worked over. Its the Stainless one. The colts I have had were not very good timing wise either. The Taurus have impressed me with their timming and accuraucy. I carried a Taurus 44 Special five shot that was a nice little carry gun. I built a couple 1911's on Springfield Armory frames that I really liked but my favorite started life as a cheap Auto Ordance. I put a Springfiel barrel in it after I cracked the recoil lug. A gunsmith friend worked it over for me and it turned out to be the best shooting 1911 I ever had. It was loose as hell but shot pretty good and just never malfunctioned with anything. He built me a comp for it with an extra slide for combat shooting. I fell on hard times and unloaded about 20 tuned up autos and revolvers. (Medical emergency) I will never be able to replace most of them.
