Which brand of action is the best?
I was looking at Chistensen Arms web site and they offer to put their barrels on any action stocked gun you supply. They will build a custom gun from scratch using, Remington, Winchester, Browning, Sako, or Weatherby. Now I am not planning on or have the money to have a custom gun built. But if you could or did already do it what action would have it built on and why? Also what action is the strongest?

RE: Which brand of action is the best?
I would not hesitate to use any of the actions that you listed. Nor would I pass on a Savage action. I have had several rifles built on the Model 700 action without any problem at all. I have never used a Browning action however I like the Browning rifles that I have owned. I have not seen any actoins stronger than the Savage lest it be a Mauser action. Many rifles have been built on the 98 Mauser action. People swear by the pre 64 Winchester action but I have not used one for a custom rifle.
I have used more Remington actions mostly because they were easy to find in LH. |
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
I use remington 700 actions because they are easy to find, easy to bed and there are the most stocks and accessories available for them. Most people also find them the easiest to make accurate.

RE: Which brand of action is the best?
Depends on the application your considering this rifle for.
|
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
My favorites are the Sako and 700 Remington. Both make a very accurate base for a cutom shooter.

RE: Which brand of action is the best?
I personally like the Browning action. The Rem 700 is hard to beat though.

RE: Which brand of action is the best?
I would use a Sako 75 in most applications. I have a custom with 700's and its good. But I would put a new extractor system on there like the sako has already. I also have grown to love a 3 bolt lug. Second I would pick a mod 70 or mauser. Has just about everything I like.
Only issue I believe is the sako75 can be expensive for a donor a tad heavier, (I think) than a 700. |
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
doesnt Lazzeroni use Savage actions?? I find that odd that Savage wasnt one of the ones optioned.

RE: Which brand of action is the best?
IdahoElk.. I got off the phone with my best friend who lives about 10 miles from my Gunsmith. He told me the gunsmith had a Christensen arms non shooter sitting on his bench. As far as the smith could tell it had to be the barrel.
The strongest action out there would be a Remington ,Weatherby MKV or a Ruger and probably not in that order. Although looking at my Vanguard with its machined forged reciever I can't see that blowing up or allowing much gas to get to the shooters face. |
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
Im not arguing with you because I honestly dont know, but I was handed a gun that had a beautiful stock, and had something on the barrel about 7.68 patriot??? And it said Lazzeroni on the barrel. Also the guy told me it was one?? But it had a Savage bolt in it. I dunno, I just know the guy isnt one to b.s. about stuff like that.
oh it had a real short case, kinda reminded me of a 300 wsm but even fatter and stubbier |
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
Not arguing at all ..maybe Lazzeroni chambered and assembled their rifles as well. Like I said before not sure a lot of them were sold
|
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
yeah, maybe we're both right, heck I dont know!!!!:D
|
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
I have the same thoughts as BC. There are reasons why a 3 lug is
better than 2 lugs. |

RE: Which brand of action is the best?
Also what action is the strongest? Which is strongest? This is purely an opinion....no data to back it up...the strongest action is a toss up between Remington 700 and Savage bolt actions. However the use of any bolt action made since the 1950s is likely to be as strong as you wish.....The brass case is the weak link in the system and stronger isn't much help when you're dealing with a meltdown case. However the CRF actions are far more likely to let go in such an event where as the push feeds will hold in the meltdown. The action will be welded together but you likely won't have a face full of gas and molten brass. Even the M98 Mauser of 1898 will hold a case up until the meltdown stage. Same for the Japanese Arisaka, 1917 Enfield and the '03 Springfield. |

You ain't coming over here. I can't get anyone to visit. They say its too far. I think I would take a good woopin for visitors. Nutin much going on since the old lady left. |
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
I did a little search, and found that Lazzeroni's do not use Savage actions on their Warbirds etc.... however, they did make some for Savage on Savage actions, in their 7.82 patriot chambering.....sorry for my misinterpretation. I never said I knew it all (like Bigcountry does) :D:D but thats why its good to have a tool like the internet!

RE: Which brand of action is the best?
Geez, If I were to have a custom rifle built, the last thing I would do is have it built on a bargain basement action like the Savage. What next, custom rifles built on a rem 710? :D
I'd pick the Sako 75 or Remington 700. A Winchester or Ruger wouldn't be bad either so long as the piece of poop cast extractors are replaced with something made out of honest to goodness spring steel. |

RE: Which brand of action is the best?
Most custom builders use the Remington 700 action. Not knocking any of the others.
|
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
If I had the money, I would have a custom rifle built on a Dakota Model 76 African Action. I would also use a Weatherby Mark V, or Sako Model 75 Action. Good luck.
|
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
Speaking of talking out the butt...Im here to offer my unparalelled expert opinion....
Nothing and I mean nothing is a better action to base a custom big dollar rifle on than the 710 action!! Simply unbeatable!! :D:D |

RE: Which brand of action is the best?
Here is a little more info on the Savage/Lazzeroni
To provide more access for his short magnums, Lazzeroni struck a similar deal with Savage Arms(same as Sako). Savage would modify its short-action Model 16-FCSS Weather Warrior to handle Lazzeroni's 7.21 (.284) Tomahawk and 7.82 (.308) Patriot. The resultant Savage 16-LZ, marketed exclusively by Lazzeroni Arms, was priced at $699. |
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
I have read this whole post and never seen a Howa action mentioned. I have seen many 1000 yard rifles built from this action. Must be something to it ..
|
RE: Which brand of action is the best?
I personally would go with either a remington or savage action

RE: Which brand of action is the best?
ORIGINAL: Slamfire ORIGINAL: Rebel Hog I have the same thoughts as BC. There are reasons why a 3 lug is better than 2 lugs. from 90 to 60 degrees and relieve case side thrust, depending the lugs are lapped even. Most of factory cases have .003 to .005 run-out. The thin side will become the long side and thick side will be the short side when fired, causing the case to flex to the side. A 4 lug rifle will improve this condition even more (position 12,3,6 and 9 o'clock).. Check run-out on a case fired with a 2 lug rifle and than check a case fired with a 3 lug rifle. Which one has flexed more than the other. Which ever way that case has flexed is the way the bullet will print on the rifling and will not be true centered. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON 2 AND 3 LUGS? |
