RE: What defines a carbine?

Usually rifles with barrels of less than about 18" are considered carbines, while rifles with barrels of 20" or more are commonly not considered carbines unless longer barreled versions exist.

The term has also been applied to rifles that are short in design, like the M1 Carbine. The .44-40 carbine is a pistol caliber carbine.

Yes, I’m aware of this. I suggest you take a look at the laws since this isn’t true. Any rifle with a barrel less than 16" long must be registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Shotguns with barrels less than 18" long fall into the same category. The Ruger M77 Mark II Frontier is 16 ½” long. Also, the Beretta Cx4 Storm is 16.6” long.

RE: What defines a carbine?

I might be wrong but to me a Carbine has always meant a shorter version of an existing longer barreled gun. At least most of what I call carbines, also came in a longer version.

RE: What defines a carbine?

This could be the best working practical definition. If a Mauser 93 came with a 27.5" barrel, the 24" model is a carbine. In the AR-15 line of guns, the 20" is the rifle and the 16" considered a carbine.

Yes Roskoe, just like the Mannlicher-Carcano (carbine version) which has a barrel length of 20.87”.
