i work at wal-mart in the sporting goods dept.. store 1192.. no the guns aren't low quality.. wal mart buys them cheaper than the dealer can b/c they buy in bulk.. they sell them AT COST.. the theory behind this is.. women are 70% of the business.. if wal mart can sell the guns at a very low price, the husband can buy them AT WAL MART.. if the husband can find a good deal on the guns, then the woman stays happy with wal mart and KEEPS SHOPPING.. there u go.. a myth is busted..

yes I used to work at wally world too, (#1867) and I do remember being able to access pricing of items, and found that wal mart does strategically price certain items to make minimal (sometimes zero or negative profit) on certain items just to get a certain demographic into the store. Of course some items carried a 150% mark up too!! Balancing the equation out.

I have to admitt I'm sold on Wally World. Besides having a family of four, and being the main bread winner of the home (the wife don't work to take care of our two little ones). Wallmart is one of the few places that when it comes down to her restocking the house I give her the Bank Card and say get what ever you want. Just kidding however just a few weeks ago we were shopping at Wally World and I took my stroll through the sporting goods department to check out whats on sale left over from deer season. I spoted a Fixed Blade "Buck" Knife that cabelas sells for around $60, for $29.99. Well I thought it was a good deal so I told the clerk at the counter I'll take it, he explains to me "it's on sale because it has no box it was a display". I then checked it out and looked at the blade and verifyed everything was just like new and never been used so I gave him the ok to ring it up. The clerk rang it up and it came up $4.98!! I made him check it again because I believe everyone should get a second chance to correct a mistake, and sure enough it rang up again at $ 4.98. I bought that Knife and will continue to shop at wallmart because of the prices, true their customer service is not always to be desired however I consider myself a smart buyer because I know a deal when I see one, when it comes down to hunting fishing, and camping thats for darn sure.

I think I'll stop by Wal-mart to morrow and have them ring up all thier rifles for a price check!

Mossy that's part of the smoke and mirrors game they play but that a lot of "LOYAL" shoppers haven't picked up on yet.

If I just can't find it anywhere else, I'll force myself to shop at Walmart. Otherwise, I avoid em'. I've never bought any kind of firearm, scope or anything like that from them. I don't enjoy going to Walmart at all.

I used to work at walmart, I redneck stuck in seafood. I bought a T/C PA Carbine 50cal flintlock with my christmas extra discount. They do have good prices on ammo and some sales but I wish they carried names like CZ, stoger, EAA etc. quality stuff at budget prices. I love Gander mountain even more than the Cabelas in West VA. Dicks is alright but I will always browse my local gun dealers also.

I must not be the only perv on this site.....My buddy and I would actually leave 15 min early on our indoor bow league night, just to swing past Wal Mart and um.......see if there was anything good in there, I know we're pathetic, but what do you expect from two 30 yr olds who are married with kids??? ;)

why does it seem that you can go into 20 diff. stores and not see anything that compares to Wal Mart?? (yeah I know cause all the trashy girls shop there I know)

My dad used to work at #698 but now he works at the newest one in town.

We have bought 3 guns from wal mart and all were real straight shooters.

Wally World may have the best prices on guns but don't ask the kid behind the counter a question. If I want expert advice I go to the local gun shop and pay a few bucks more for the service.

I have bought guns at Walmart with no problems. They can always get the Handi Rifles that I want. You guys are right about the other benifits at walmarm.:D

One thing I have learned, you always have to compare the price to WalMart if you want to get the best deal in town. But, your right about the kid behind the counter. [&:]

While I agree with your statement for the most part, the same can be said for some gun shops. When traveling I try to stop at local gun stores mainly just to look around. You would be suprised at some of the bullcrap some of these guys will try to throw at you. Normally, the people working in gun stores are more experienced and knowledgeable than the sporting goods dept. at WalMart but go in some stores that do not personally know you and you may be suprised.

The biggest difference I have found is this....Ask the guy at WalMart a question and they get a dumb look on their face and say I don't know...I just work here. Ask the guys working at the gun store a question and you normally get a straight answer....sometimes an opinion...but sometimes they try to fill you full of bullcrap to make you think they know what they are talking about. Working behind the counter at a gun store does not automatically make one a firearms expert.

When I buy a gun or anything else that I'm going to drop a big dime on, I do my research before I go into a store/dealer. Sometimes if they have a piece of info to share, I will listen to it, but usually they aren't telling me something I haven't heard or read. By the time I set foot in a store, I'm looking for a good price, not advice.

That is the way to do it unfortunately too many people are subject to impulse buying.

Or you could ask for a box of Remington 7 mag 140 grain corelockts and get presented with 7-08,7wsm and 7 stw ammo since they didn't seem to know what a 7 rem mag was. BOy was that a lawsuit waiting to happen.

As my sister said"Wal-Mart is the center hub to Red-neckville"

But hey,you can't beat their prices on cammo, fishing and other outdoor stuff.I walked into the local Wal-mart last year, was just browsing, checking things out.I looked in one of the glass case and hear they had a Buck Alfa hunter knife for only 19.99,man I bought in a heartbeat, thats 40 bucks off what anyone else had it for.
They are tough on regular stores, but I still shop at both.

Man isn't that the truth, I would even go and add a few other stores in like Sportsmans Warehouse. Sportsman does caryy everything for a hunter and fisherman, but some of the employies don't seem to know their product very well. I have asked about certian reloading items only to be told that they don't exist or they don't carry them. Only to find them myself and say well what do you call this then. Also one time I was buying 10 Gauge shotgun shells and was just compareing prices between the brands. A employe came up to me and annonced that he worked in the gun dept. and that if I needed help with anything just go ahead and ask. I ask if they still had on shells on sell? He said he didn't know but would find out. He asked me what I was looking for, I told him and he was like cool my buddy shoots a 10 Gauge too. I then told him that I love my Browning Gold 10. He looked at me strait face and asked now is that the Browning Pump or the single shot? I can't remember? I thought he was just joking and said oh it's just the single. I then just for fun because I thought he was joking said how much do they sell for now? He said follow me we will have a look. He then went and started to look at the single shot shotguns. He couldn't find it and called on the phone and asked the gun manager to come and try to help him find a Browning Gold 10 gauge. At that point I knew he wasn't joking and realy didn't know what he was looking for. I told him it's over there, and pointed, he was like its an auto? I then asked him you don't know what a Browning Gold is but you work in the gun department? He responded well I wasn't sure what it was, but I have heard of it and I have only worked here a month and we have many guns. Its too many to keep track of all of them. I was totaly shocked and was thinking how in the world do you sell guns but don't know the product. I still buy stuff at sportsman but I know what I want and find it myself without any help. My brothers and I call it the "I don't know sporting good store" ask them a question and all they can say is "I don't know".:D They have good prices but I guess they can't afford good help.

Yea, we have a Sportsman Warehouse here in the D/FW area of Texas. My boss gave me a gift certificate from there for Christmas so me and my brother-in-law went there on Christmas Eve.

Most of the stuff was overpriced. One of the guys in the hunting dept started talking to me and my brother in law. Military firearms came up and it was amazing how much BS this guy was spewing. My brother in law was a class 3 dealer (full automatic/suppressors) and I was an Army Infantry Captain so it wasn't hard for us to recognize BS. The ones that think they know something are worse than the ones who don't know anything IMHO. Like I said before, I know what I want before I step foot in a store and I usually know how much their competitors are charging also.

Hi FBPlaya:

I have no reason to doubt you are in the one percent that knows everything a customer may ask you. However, if you do have that knowledge, you have to admit you not fairly compensated for it and are probably paid as much as someone that doesn't.

The guys at our store seem to have their act together as well, except I was in there yesterday and all the archery gear is gone and the hunting supplies have been reduced to about a 8' section of shelves.

Hey Footballplaya, Think you can find a Beretta 390 20ga. in the back room?
