My Dream Rifle
Here's what I want. I hunt Deer and Elk and I see this as the best rifle for me. Unfortunately no one makes "this" gun (yet);
.300 Ultra Mag Detachable external box magazine Stainless Composite stock I know the Browning A-bolt is close but I want a mag. that just drops straight out without opening the hinge plate. Remington? Browning? Winchester? Are you listening? Power http://www.powerandfury.net/hunt.html ![]() |
RE: My Dream Rifle
If anyone knows where I can get this rifle for under $1,000 please let me know.

heck my idea of the perfect rifle is one that won't miss kinda like my Savage .243 never misses and always a one shot kill.

RE: My Dream Rifle
a 300 ultra mag? why a round that big? i always thought that the winchester 300 mag was kinda on the big side. anywayz. all you need is 1 shot i agree. i like detachable boxes better but hinged aren't bad. i guess this rifle is still your dream rifle because you'll be dreaming for a lil wihle until a gun company makes one of these.

Power gregwth7mmmag
Certainly must be some merit in what gregwth7mmmag says. I note that not even Sako provides a removable mag for any of their rifles that they have chambered for the 300 Ultra mag. If Sako could have offered a removable mag I'm sure they would have. gg. "Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement." |
RE: My Dream Rifle
A detachable magazine wouldn't work because it is so long. You would have to seat the bullets to deep. I agree with the other replies, if you hit an animal with the 300 Ultra Mag you don't have much of an animal left. One shot one animal unless you miss
Why work when you can hunt???? Heck why work at all!! |
RE: My Dream Rifle
Thanks for all the replies. I didn't know that about the length being an issue but I see what you mean. Perhaps I should look for this rifle in 300 WSM instead? Might be good enough for what I need. I don't need the 300 UM but I have several friends that have them and they are all nice guns and shoot very well. Would hate to be "out-gunned" by my buds ;)
The main reason I'm thinking of changing is my 7mm Browning just isn't accurate. I've tried about everything short of a new barrel but I just can't get good accuracy with her. Usually nothing better than 2" at 100 yds with handloads (and also with all manufacturer's ammo). Instead of pulling out my hair with this gun I figure I should just upgrade to a new one. I'd like one that is big enough to hunt Moose and Bear if I ever go that way but I can only afford to have 1 big game rig. I'm kind of leaning toward the Christianson Arms Carbon rifle. Anyone tried one of these? Power http://www.powerandfury.net/hunt.html ![]() |

RE: My Dream Rifle
Browning has a stainless Stalker with the box mag that is mounted to a hinged floor plate and that might be as close as I get for under $700. The Christianson Arms has that same Browning with a carbon-wrapped barrel for $1,500 in either 300 WSM or UM. I've heard and read that the 300 WSM is very accurate due to the case shape (35 degree shoulder) and that design also helps with efficiency use of powder as well.
Anyone have good info on good handloads for the WSM? I would probably use a 180g Partition. What speeds are you getting with that load? Power http://www.powerandfury.net/hunt.html ![]() |

But it sounds like you have a plan power& the dream rifle could be reality. .almost:)
no one makes a 30. cal / 50 cal.bmg brass necked down & shooting extra long,& heavy 300+ grain 30 cal bullets ? in a single shot &a nice long range scope with.. the 30/50.** o... might just have to shoot at 55 gal empty drums from a distance <img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle> i am dreaming only i know <img src=icon_smile_sleepy.gif border=0 align=middle> |

RE: My Dream Rifle
Power,
Are you sure about the Sako's? A friend has a 375 with the detachable mag. I thought he said that Sako had the detachable option on all their rifles. In looking at the Sako site the 75 comes with fixed or detachable mag. no mention of caliber restriction and the 375 is a longer cartridge. Quote "Sako 75 is available in top loading fixed or detachable 2-row staggered magazine. The magazine follower is made of aluminium to ensure faultless operation. The outer liner of the magazine is made of stailess steel and the magazine can be loaded through the ejection port on top of the rifle." End-quote The above is from the Sako page uder the Features link at the top. Unless you just don't want to spend that much money I'd talk to a Sako dealer. My 2 cents! RE: My Dream Rifle
The Ultra mags are hinged floor plates only in the Sako.

Power, Are you sure about the Sako's?<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> I appreciate your help Greg. You have to open the .pdf document on the tech. specs for that little tidbit of info. It looks like just the UM are affected. Since I'm buying a brand new rifle might as well get just what I want. Browning is the closest with a 300 WSM with a detachable internal magazine. They retail around $900. I'm sure Remington or Winchester will offer a comparrable rifle next year if they are smart. I wrote to all the big 3 about this and they were close-lipped about next years production, some marketing mumbo jumbo. I guess I'll have to wait until next season and look at my options then. RE: My Dream Rifle
Shooter said "if you hit an animal with the 300 Ultra Mag you don't have much of an animal left"
Shooter where are you hitting your animals. I suggest not shooting the hind, the loins or the front shoulders of the animals. This might help your "animal left" thing. Shot a deer with mine last year just to throw some blood on it. Hit right thru both lungs. Guess what. No meat damage. guess why. Shot placement. Couldn't eat the heart however. Probably shouldn't anyway over the cholesteral thing. |
RE: My Dream Rifle
Power,
Did you remember which pdf you found that tidbit in? You have got me curious. I searched this document http://sako2.nitrofx.com/sako/pdf/ma...ako75kc_rh.pdf and they say repeatedly that ALL models can have the hindged floow plate or the detachable magazine and are changeable after the fact. Please let me know Thanks! Greg "Getting close to the game is the joy of Bowhunting for me, the harvest is a bonus." ![]() Live 15 ft Python after eating a small Antelope! |
RE: My Dream Rifle
Here ya go;
http://sako2.nitrofx.com/sako/pdf/sp...cStainless.pdf I followed that link you sent me and clicked on the Technical Specifications link that took me to that .pdf. States all rifles come with the detachable mag EXCEPT the Rem. Ultra Mags which come with a hinged floor plate magazine only. I still might check out that rifle in a .300 WSM. I'm starting to lean toward that caliber instead. The Sako might be a good option if they offer that caliber. I've also been looking at the Howa rifles and they are supposed to be very good for much less than the big 3. Might be an option too. Power http://www.powerandfury.net/hunt.html ![]() |
RE: My Dream Rifle
Power, maybe it is the scope on your 7Mag that is causing some accuracy problems. I am sure you have checked that, but just in case. I just got my Rem BDL 7 mag and took it to the range...I am impressed never shot groups like this before and I am shooting Federal 150 Gr Ballistic tips from off the shelf.
But I know how you feel, same thing happened to me with another rifle, finally just got rid of it...however my gunsmith buddy says half the stuff is in your head, when you don't feel good, it ain't going to go good. Peace a mind is worth the price to me, Good luck! |
RE: My Dream Rifle
Power you are right you must get the rifle YOU want. I recently bought a Rem Sendero 300 RUM and I really like it. I have only put about 30 rounds thru it so far. I just found a can of Retumbo, not stocked around here. This is the powder I want to use instead of H1000. I don't think the recoil is bad at all, my friends Browning 338WM recoils more. One other rifle I considered was a Sako TRG in 30-378 but I wanted a laminate stock and heavy barrel. Finally found myself one and am not a bit dissapoited even though it took awhile. Good Luck and hope you find what you are looking for.

RE: My Dream Rifle
Thanks for the input all. It is most appreciated. MR300WM, I know what you mean about recoil. I've shot my 7mm Rem. Mag. next to my buddies .300 UM and the UM seems to be the same recoil. I've always noticed the 7 has a very sharp kick instead of a push like the UM. Of course, the UM still pushes pretty hard but doesn't seem as sharp as the 7.
I have good news! I finally got around to glass-bedding my 7mm and did some preliminary sighting in. After I got the scope adjusted my first try I shot a 3-shot group, over the hood of a truck, not even trying hard, and managed a .75" group at 100 yards. I'm trying not to get too excited yet but if it keeps that kind of accuracy I'll be content with this rifle for a while. I have tried a dozen other steps but didn't know enough about gunsmithing to tackle glass bedding plus didn't think it would make that much difference. Going to the range tomorrow night and will let you all know how she shoots. I'm VERY optomistic at this point. I knew it was bugging me but never knew how much until she started shooting better. Can you tell I'm excited? Power http://www.powerandfury.net/hunt.html ![]() |

Thanks Power!
I couldn't find it when I was looking. Good Luck in your search! Lets us know what you finally get. Greg "Getting close to the game is the joy of Bowhunting for me, the harvest is a bonus." ![]() Live 15 ft Python after eating a small Antelope! |
RE: My Dream Rifle
Hey Power, did you get a chance to shoot the Rifle with the Glass Bedding yet? I'm interested in getting it done to my rifle, and just want some feedback from people who have done it to their rifle's and what kind of difference it has made. And as for the Rifle with the Clip..Might be worth talking with a Gunsmith, they should be able to convert your rifle from Hinged to a Removeable Clip. That is another thing I am planning on doing to my rifle shortly. |
RE: My Dream Rifle
Glad to help Greg. And thank you for the info.
moosecaller, I only shot the rifle on Sunday and didn't have time to shoot more than about a box to get it sighted (actually got it with about 10 shells). Had to move the crosshairs about 20 clicks left to get it close. I'll be shooting it tomorrow night and will let you know what I find. Before I glassbedded I was 2+" groups at 100 yds. Keep your fingers crossed! James |
RE: My Dream Rifle
Great news! I shot my 7mm last night after just glass-bedding the stock. OMG!!! I shot 6 different groups and the biggest one was 1 3/8" at 100 yds and the best was just .75" !!! I'm so relieved and much happier now. Best group I ever had with this rifle was about 2" at 100 and I know I'm a better shot than that.
Guess I don't have as good an excuse to get a new rifle so that sucks <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> but I guess I'll just have to be happy with this one for a while. Just wanted to share with you all my success. If you haven't glass-bedded your rifle and she won't shoot well that is the first thing I will do from now on. I can't believe how much difference it made. Power http://www.powerandfury.net/hunt.html ![]() |
