I own 3 Savages (well two actually, the wife took my 243). All are accurate and dependable as well as being reasonably priced. If I buy another rifle it will be another Savage. How old is your kid? Savage makes the model 10 Sierra which is comberable in size to the Model 7. I just reworked the stock on the wife's gun so it would fit her.

though i have never owned a savage, that will be my first rifle but as i live in an area where no rifle hunting is allowed then it will have to wait until i have all the handguns i need out of the way

I have a remington 700 youth in 243. my son uses it and this will be his second year to use it. he sho a model 7 in 6mm before i bought this gun.
I have let him shoot a 308 in a model seven but the recoil is a little to much for him to shoot comfortably.he missed a good buck because i made him shoot it and was scared of the recoil. i have found that the 243 is great for him.
now i don't like the remington iss system. so i would recommend looking at the ruger sub compact they have out now . very nice guns.

Hey guy's i looked at a model 7 in 7mm-08 what do you think of that caliber.Do you think it would be good for my kid she will be hunting deer and hogs with it.

7mm-08 Rem is probably on of the best deer cartridges around. Great ballistics and mild recoil. You also have the added bonus of a wide variety of 7mm bullets to choose from if you reload. I have a Remington 788 chambered in 7mm-08 and it is going to be my go-to gun this year instead of my usual 300 Win Mag. Texasducks, if you aren't too far from Bossier City, LA I would be happy to let you shoot my 7mm-08. Might help you decide if recoil will be acceptable. Have you thought much on the 260 Rem? Looks promising as a deer cartridge for the recoil shy with more pop than the 243 Win.

tex...My son started with a Model Seven (youth) in the 7mm-08 and all I had to do was change stocks when he grew! He loves the caliber and so do I...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
