I shot both for several hours today. Ran out of ammo so I'd say it was a good day. Both guns were a joy to shoot. Tryin to get rid of some 175 gr core lokts from the late 80's actually very accurate. I was impressed as it was my first full day of shooting with the big 7. Of course the 270 is always a joy to shoot also. I have a 7-08 also but it didnt make the journey today.

7mm what?? 7mm rem mag, 7mm-08. 7mm-30 waters, 7mm remington express, 7mm mauser,7mm rsaum, 7mm wsm, 7mm weatherby mag, 7mm stw, 7mm rum, 7mm ste, or 7mm br??? just 7mm doesnt mean squat there are somany 7mm's you need to specify......

I love my 270. But you can't go wrong with either cartridge. The 7mm, I assume you mean the 7mm Rem Mag or RUM, has an edge in downrange energy and you will feel it on your shoulder too. It will also eat up more powder per round if you reload. Factory ammo is probably a little more too.
But its your choice, and a whitetail or mulie out to 300 or even 400 yds won't know the difference.

I own a .270 win model 70 feather weight syn. stock original from factory blue. It prefer anything Winchester power X the best 130gran for deer are more accurate than core lock or supreme win ammo, though I am cheap and pick up some pmc 130grains at duham’s. My brother uses his deceased father "vietnam sniper and former gunsmith who died from heart atack after he shot an 8 point up in Kane PA", custom 7rem mag built on a Sako action lathed barrel and custom stock. Now my brother is left handled but can shoot ether bolt but hates the safety’s that are push button. He flinched like made when he shot the 7mm at the range also very loud. His dad self loaded light roads for deer, my brother wishes he new a good pick for shells. My old roommate’s dad shoots a stainless with muzzle brake savage and he already hit two deer with one bullet when they were standing in front of each other. My one disabled marine cousin who hunts on a ffarm uses a 300win mag with brake and figer groove is all about the magnums.

What 7??? Sheesh give the guy a break, its well understood that when someone says "7mag" they mean THE largest selling magnum on earth. The 7mm Rem Mag!!! There are more of them sold than all the other "7s" combined. That was un-called for if you ask me.

Now to answer the question, for deer only either will work great on deer in most instances. Personally I would take the 7mag because of its versatility over the 270. BUT he asked about guns for deer didnt he? He didnt ask about the mythical "one gun for all" caliber. (LOL I'm becomming as literal as some of you guys!)

as much as I love the 270, been shooting one for over 30 years now, if it came right down to one caliber for all of North America short of the big bears... it would be the 280AI...

faster then the 270, can handle all the 7mm bullets, shoots right up to the 7mag velocities and has less recoil, better case life and just flat out looks better... plus you can use factory 280's if you get out some where and need ammo...

I pick the 7mag. There is a reason that there are so many 7mm calibers. Nothing wrong with the 270....I like the extra energy beyond 300 yards w/the 7mag.
