Pre-64, Pre ban...
 

What do these terms mean? I have always seen these numbers and such but never understood what they were, why and all that good stuff. Also is there anyother terms like those that I'm forgetting?

Pre64 is referring to a mod 70 winchester action with a claw extractor. Some believe they cheapened the rifle after that and push feeds came along and it was all over.

PreBan is referring to the assult weapon ban. There were alot of changes to AR's like flash suppressors, and barrels I believe to make them a little harder to convert. I think, don't quote me.

As referring to the Assault Weapons Ban, before the ban, you could have as many umm... "goodies" as you liked. When the ban came along, there were no flashsuppressors allowed, no pistol grip stock, no hig cap mags, folding stocks, etc, or at least you couldn't have more than 2 of those features on any weapon.

How long ago was it that Winchester changed their rifles from a claw extractor type. Would a flash supressor make it so that when shot at night the flame would not be seen? Thanks for the info.

Umm... 1964, and yes the flash supressor reduces the amount of muzzle flash that can be seen.
They are used mainly on short barreled, high velocity weapons, where the flash can be quite extreme.

Not quite. In 1964, Winchester revamped their entire product line. Some of their line was dropped compleately, other models were tweeked to make production faster, cheaper, and more efficient. The Model 70 and Model 94 were two of the rifles that had design changes done to them. They stayed in production, but were changed.
Bottom line was Winchester's designs, machinery, and tooling could not be competative with other manufacturers unless they took drastic steps to streamline their line. They did, and people have been whining about it ever since!

I occasionaly see references to a "Pre '64" Remington, or other company's guns. Simply means whoever made the reference is ignorant of the facts.

Your splitting hairs may be right. But when most people refers to a Pre64 action. I bet 95% are referring to the model 70 with a claw. Which I believe is what the poster was questioning.

that was kind of a no brainer wasnt it?????????:eek::eek::eek:

and one other thing on the AR pre ban list was a bayonet lug!! I dont understand all of the reasons why they banned some of that stuff, as if me having or not having a bayonet on my gun would deter me from using my assault rifle in an illegal way???

I went to a gun show recently with a friend and its interesting to see the M4's for sale and how many post-ban guns have what seems to be falling prices right now.

I'd love to pick up an AR and tune it up for a varmint rifle. I favored the M4 ever since I layed eyes on it and now they're available. I know a longer barrel would probably be better for varmints, but I've always loved carbines for some reason. I believe the M4 comes with a 16 inch barrel.
